I noticed that a few members here have this lens.

Anyone care to comment on how it performs compared to the old AFD 80-200mm f/2.8 IF-ED?

It's a great lens, I love it. Light weight, sharp and the VR is fantastic, will post some review and sample pics soon.

Of course it doesn't have constant f/2.8 aperture, so can be a problem when shooting sport or low light moving objects.

But for portraiture with telephoto compression, the bokeh is lovely at f/4.5 already and the patters and very pleasing, the f/2.8 would be marginally sharper too.

For birds, animals and general shootings it's a really good lens for the weight and price (less than RM2k).

I thought that it'd make a good alternative to the heavy f/2.8 lenses....

Short of a AFS 70-200mm f/2.8 VR, this seems to be the one to go for!

DP will arrange one soon, I can bring this one along.

Will compile a review soon, just trying to collect a variety of shots first as I haven't had the lens that long.

So far have some portrait, motorsports and birds.

http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/lenses/nikkor_70300_4556vr/index.htm

looks very good at 70 and 200 mm comparable to the 80-200 at f5.6 in terms of sharpness but no 2.8 though, that's two stops btw. What do intend to use it for?

Not sure how that's relevant here bro...we are discussing 70-300mm VR lens.

I think this 75-150 is an E-series lens....manual focus....err....light years behind the 70-300 VR which we're supposed to be discussing.

SK...I just thought it'd be interesting to discuss the 70-300 VR as an option to similar but heavier 70-200 f/.28 zooms. They can be a real pain to lug around and that causes them to be left behind quite often....You'll end up not getting your money's worth!

I only carry the essential lens with me. If its too heavy or too bulky,I like to question myself why did I purchase it in the first place. wanna mentioned that the f2.8 is nevertheless top class. 70-300mm VR, helps to get the additional reach at 300mm (1.5X300mm on digital cameras.)

Yeah 70-300mm VR is nice and light and compact compared to 70-200 f/2.8 with 1.4x TC!

Going price now is around RM1900.

thinking to get this 70 ~ 300 as well but too bad, not working with TC and yet 300mm too short for bird.;)

It is light, built better that 55-200VR, good zoom range and image good for quite a budget lens.

:) I'll go for it.

Can teleconverters be used on the 70-300VR?

Yes, I use the Tamron SP AF Teleconverter 300F-FNs 2X. Works well in manual focus mode but not in AF more unless very bright sunny day. Coz all the F-Stop is double.
