As usual, nice series, I like them all. The cicada is one weird looking creature.

Another unusual spider. Lately, when gone into macro, I have been noticing more and more species of spiders.

One question:
Are the ways of reducing spectral highlights on certain insects when flash is used?

I have problems with certain "metallic" insects even when my flash is diffused. :? I have to resort to natural lighting with ISO boost. :(

Thanks, Joyce. I sent a Ninja team to kill the noise in #2 so it wasn't that obvious afterwards :)

Metallic bug...Grr...they always try to be difficult :D. How do you diffuse your light?

I'm using Flip it-diffuser :)

I'm using Flip it-diffuser :)

Not good enough. Light gets diffused too early and too far from the subject so it's still quite hard/harsh. Try a coke can diffuser or a quick and diryt styrofoam plate diffuser.

Macro needs a certain type of diffusion as the light is very close to the subject (ideally) - those like omnibounce/flip-it/lightsphere are fairly useless for macro and will still give heavy spectral reflections on shiny bugs.

You need to try coke can or milk bottle with layers of kitchen roll and get the diffuser head as close to the end of your lens as possible.

Nice and sharp shots. Kiankheong...maybe u wanna try to set your flash to TTL + BL mode?

Nice and sharp shots. Kiankheong...maybe u wanna try to set your flash to TTL + BL mode?

For me TTL is good enough. No need to BL as the background is dark (under forest cover and with such high shutter speed and narrow aperture).

I find TTL extremely unreliable for macro, better to use manual settings as your distance is virtually the same to the subject for every shot.

Yup, you have mentioned this before. Somehow TTL still serves me very well. Perhaps I have correctly compensated the flash exposure. :?

Yah depends on subject/background relationship too and if the light is flat/mottled/shadow etc.

When you are moving between terrain you have to keep changing the compensation with TTL (that's what I mean by unreliable), once I set 1/4 or 1/8 depending on my aperture and ambient condition I can just shoot for the rest of the session - no need to fiddle with compensation :D
