noob question, will you get the same effect of fast moving background (like those F1 photos) when you pan your macro lens following the ants?
:)

For 1st photo, just use faster speed to still the focused ants, bcos of big aperture, background bcome blur.
For 2nd photo, just use lower speed, but have to wait those few ants stop running there, this 1 spent me a lot time, bcos they r still moving even slow.
I didn't use panning technique here, there is not easy to pan in macro mode.

I believe that these are termites, not ants. Correct me if I'm wrong though.

look closely, the "ants" actually carrying some small stones or dried mud, believed is for the building of their nest.
just guessing, termites doesn't "buit" nest, they just chew whatever they can chew and just take over as nest.

Termites build nests, ants build underground tunnels. Termite next looks like this (http://images.google.com.my/images?q=termite+nest&ie=UTF-8&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&sa=N&tab=wi).
