Hi all,
I've just started to learn lighting and recently I got and SB600 and an SB800, and am looking for an umbrella and stand. I've got a few questions:
1. what kind of stand should I get that would be able to fit both the flash and umbrella? Is there a brand (not too expensive, please) that I should be looking for?
2. What colour umbrella is best for a general purpose shoot (portrait, still life).
3. Can I get both in Eng Tong (I live in Taman Tun) or is there somewhere else I can go to (that's hopefully near PJ)?
Appreciate all the help.

Manfrotto makes both the stand and umbrella holder. But the umbrella is made by someone else, maybe made in China. Eng Tong has the Manfrotto of course but I'm not sure if they have the umbrella.
I bought my complete set from Keat at Jalan Pudu.

Thanks En Noordin.
Do you happen to know the price? I'm going to Eng Tong later this afternoon, so if I have the price maybe I'll be able to get some latitude in bargaining.
Again, thanks.

S'okay, no problem. I'll just go to manfrotto website and try and get a ballpark figure.

Eng Tong gives standard prices with standard 20% discount, there's no latitude for bargaining as they are a distributer first and a retailer second.
If you have a tighter budget I suggest you head to Mutiara Complex at Jalan Ipoh and check out Digicolour, they have a massive range of lighting equipment like stands, brollies, softboxes, wireless triggers and strobes (all made in China and cheap).

1. Stands - if all u need is a flash stand, u can buy a cheap tripod. I use a Slik. Pro: Very light and portable. Con: When the wind blows, the whole thing toppled.
2. Flash support: U can buy the cheap China-made brand which has a hotshoe on top to place your flash, and a "hole" below for u to screw the support onto the tripod. Make sure u bring along your tripod to ensure the right fit. If u want better brand, go for Kaiser (German) which is available in S'pore. Make sure the flash support is adjustable, can be tilted etc.
3. Umbrella. Go for white and shoot-thru... if u shoot models etc. I have worned out many China-made brands. The spines break easily and the plastic is of poor quality. In the end, I bought the better quality Photoflex (available in S'pore) umbrellas which are more durable, www.photoflex.com

Thanks, man. Appreciate it. I'm going to Engtong first just to see what they have. After that, maybe, Digicolor and Direct Photo (if I don't get lost, that is - I'm sure I will and end up in Perlis or something :)

I got my whole set-up (lightstand, Screw-mount swivel head, Umbrella) from Digicolor. Since I using the same set-up as you (a SB800 and a SB600) its best to get a extra shoot through umbrella as it can function as a softbox.

Here's my setup, which you might be interested to look at:
Stands : Manfrotto Nanostand 001B
Umbrella Adaptor : Manfrotto 026
Umbrella : Westcott 43" Double Fold Silver
The double fold feature of the umbrella is very neat and makes it very portable. Can even fit into my Lowepro Computrekker easily. Nanostand 001 is a bit of pain to find in Msia though, as Eng Tong dont bring them in unless its a MO. My advice is to get something sturdy for the stands and the adaptor... better be safe rather than having your flashgun smashed if toppling happens.
Go for either silver of white shoot through brollies. These 2 works best for portraits.

Couldn't get the manfrotto stand. But I did get a manfrotto umbrella adaptor. Tried all of them the whole day today, but all evening i kept getting underexposed shots using CLS, darned if I know why.
So went out for a drink, came back, reset the flash, and everything's fine.
For my second stand, umbrella etc, I'll try and get what you suggested.
Thanks, man.

As you can see, the strobe sits on the lite-tite which sits on the light stand.
If you want your stobe to be high then you can adjust the lite-tite to aim downwards by adjusting the handle.
It's really easy to use and you can figure it out within minutes...

My old Powershot A70 gave up then so I've limited as to what I can shoot behind the scenes.

I try to figure out where is this place, coz my construction site is in Jalan Ipoh; I do not remember seeing this place. Is there a mobile petrol station on my left if I come from the new high way from jalan duta/kuching/segambut roundabout? Is the mutiara is just oposite the mobile petrol station where you can make a u-turn back to KL/KLpac/Sentul one ??

SKY RIVER is already demolished.
DIGICOLOR at Kompleks Mutiara is right opposite the Shell Petrol Station if you are coming from Kepong.
If you are coming from Segambut/Jalan ipoh, its just beside the Hyundai showroom.
Cant miss it.
i was there yesterday to help a friend bought the umbrealla and stand too.

I bought my Zeraffe light stand from Kings Photo, Flash adapter and umbrella from Digicolor.
Zeraffe Light stand cost me Rm130
Umbrella = RM70
Flash adapter = RM45
Okay today i had went to Digi Color and Eng Tong and bought home some equipment. Previously went Direct Photo also. Before i share the cost, would like to comment on these shops first. Hope thats allowed.
Direct Photo
Went there to get my wireless trigger. Jason was no longer working and don't know who was the one that serve me. Service vice, not bad la. Price? Some of them are quite steep. The staffs not really friendly. Macam takla mood to do walk-in customer's business.:(;)
Digi Color
Heaven!! If you want to start a studio or a home studio with somehow a tight budget, here a good place to visit. Most of their products are made in China. But from the look and minor test, not bad in QC. And for the price, you probably get more things than what you expected. And yeap, staffs are friendly. I had tested a few things not happy with them and keep changing. The staff still serve me without giving me any ugly looking face.:D
The best part:
Lady boss:" leng zai, test it first. no warranty ka.":D
Eng Tong
Finally the shop is open. I went there to get both of my umbrellas. I would say the sales man (Rajah) quite friendly. When I reach there, all of them had went out for lunch. Rajah serve me @ downstairs there since then. Very friendly. :D
Out of these three, if you are on tight budget, Digi Color is the place to go. If you have better budget and want to get something better? Direct Photo? erm... okay la. If you around Cheras, and lazy to travel, it is still the place to visit.:D
Here my purchases with price and also where I bought my equipment:
1 X China Made Trigger - RM120 (Direct Photo)
2 X Light Stand - Rm120 (Digi Color)
2 X Flash Shoe/Umbrella Adapter - RM98 (Digi Color)
1 X 33" 2in1 Umbrella - RM60 (Eng Tong)
1 X 40" 2in1 Umrella - RM68 (Eng Tong)
Total = RM346 + miscellaneous RM30+/- = RM376+/- :D:D
The reason that I didn't buy my umbrellas from Digi Color was because their 2in1 umbrellas are out of stock!!:(
By the way.. I'm totally new in strobing. Got poisoned by Duke months ago and also Jay Han from the recent outing that organized by NK.

40in shoot thru = RM 40 (when I bought it lah. Maybe price revised due to XX)
light duty light stand = RM 60
heavy duty light stand = RM 90
brolly cum flash holder = RM40
except for the umbrella and the heavy duty light stand, out of stock last week when I went.
Dont like Eng Tong, they don't serve you well and a bit stucked up (IMHO). They are distributor 1st and walk-in customers can go jump into river. (is the feeling I have)
but, is a nice place to see-see look-look and go.. Oh.. they have these sort of things too... and WAH..so expensive.
DigiColor sells the cactus, but I was quoted expensive. RM170 for transmitter and receiver. (Maybe I not leng chai enough to the lady boss.)
I bought 2 in YL at much cheaper. Not very reliable mind you.
I was just browsing through looking at softboxes and the wescotts (in particular)
man, they are expensive, even thouse L brackets costs like USD20-60 bucks!
whole set of 50in softbox + speedring + adapter = USD330.
The umbrella type softbox looks promsig though. USD250 (again expensive)

Yeah.. bought at DGcolour. How come?
Bulletstorm, I'll post it when I have some time to spare to take some nicer pics of it.
(I just finished 95% of my 2nd DIY Softbox and I would have to say this one "looks" very pro like. Will take some pics and post into flickr later. Tired)
psst: It's based on the Wescott Spiderlight, complete with 5 CFL bulbs with individual control. Just don't know how it'll perform though.
