hi,

i found this place is the reign of great pano photographer here . wah, that is great. So this is what i have. Currently i face a situation when taking outdoor pano (6 pics)with canon 20D in M-mode, when i pan the camera (with tripod) to next composition, the correct Exposure always change a bit by camera. I then manually adjust the speed dial so that back to o EV (all 6 pics taken with 0 EV as my reference point). When stitch them togather, end result is always some pics slightly uneven bright and dark.

so this puzzle how some members here can have a very professional long pano picture ?

off course I know there is something call PS to help, but I asking this question more from technical and hardware point of view to do it right and solve the problem first. Thanks.

So you are using Manual exposure? Fixed Shutterspeed and Aperture?

Are you also using manual white balance? Or AWB?

Yes, using Manual exposure. Shutterspeed not fixed . Aperture Fixed. Always AWB.

workflow :
first , I go into Manual exposure, then half press the shutter button to let camera get the correct exposure. Lens shift to Manual mode. always AWB. Fixed Shutterspeed and Aperture take 1st picture. pan the camera to next composition, if possible I always try to fix speed and aperture . But the exposure level indicator in view finder always detect slighly different exposure. So I maintain apreture, but dial the speed dial to get EV backto standard exposure level "O". Ready...shoot. Then come the problem.

p/s hi Admin, who ever it is ,thanks for moving to this right thread . tq

That's your problem, you aren't using M you are using Av or A - Aperture Priority. This is not manual exposure.

You need to fix:

1) Aperture
2) Shutter Speed
3) ISO
4) White balance
5) Focal point - preferably using Hyperfocal focusing

Use M mode, not Av or P or S - use manual or preset white balance not AWB.

using M-mode, let say first photo set to 1/100 f8.0 at 0-EV iso100, the others photo also use the same shutter, aperture, iso. don't adjust speed dial anymore.

"Manual" must mean that both shutterspeed and aperture values are fixed. In your case you are not using manual, that's why the values are not 'locked'. Aperture-Priority mode is considered "Semi-Auto", which is not Manual.

so you meant when others photo, even exposure level indicator in viewfinder now show - or + EV, maintain 1/100 f8.0 iso100 . Don't touch anything, ignore - or + EV take the photo anyway ? Sorry if that sound simply but I really need to get rid of that obstacle in my head.

ok , re-write work flow :
1. set to M-mode
2. white balance set to preset or manual K value.
3. manual set ISO
4. manual set aperture
5. manual set speed
6. manual focus point
7. half press the shutter button to let camera auto focus
8. Lens shift to Manual mode.
9. take 1st photo
10. pan the camera to next composition
11. ignore -/+ EV indicator from camera ?? just "full" press shutter button take 2nd picture ??
12. repeat step 10 and 11 until all photos taken. You are Done !!

how that?

Yes is correct, just these 3 redundant.

6. manual focus point
7. half press the shutter button to let camera auto focus
8. Lens shift to Manual mode.

Just focus 1/3 into the scene using manual or AF, then lock the camera/lens to full time Manual focus.

Then continue 10 and 11 until complete.

:) Thanks. ok Question - If so many settings manual, how to know what correct aperture and speed to use ? I normally take golf course and property agent houses. Any technique/guideline to call for judgment ?

Also sometime when ground correctly exposure, but sky over exposure all detail lost. If sky correct, then ground under exposure. what to do?

First shoot in Av (or any other Auto/Semi-Auto modes) and review the photos, check the shutterspeed and aperture values used by the camera. You can use those values as a guideline for your Manual mode.

Take the picture another day, or at a better time (early morning or late evening) don't try and take near midday.

You can also try ND Grad or HDR.
