Duno if i've posted this before in SA, but anyway, this is a DIY macro ring light which you can get it done for something like prob RM2 or less. I'm just gonna show you the final "product" and a sample output which i've taken ages ago (come to think of it, I used to have a lot of DIY stuff).
Here is a list of stuff you'd need to get down with the job to produce this superb piece of "gear" :D
1. Cardboard. For those who want it to last and look a lil' pimped out, you can try to use black colored elephant cardboards which have its other side in white color.
2. Knife, pen/pencil and ruler (the basic stationery items laaaa...)
3. Sticky tapes or double sided tapes
4. Aluminium foil

hahah thanks for the reminder acidict.
maybe i should come up with a revised version of this, or probly an enlarged version to make it serve as a ring light to shoot portrait. hehehe
i've seen ur DIY macro ring flash and i realise one minor flaw though..it would be rather inconvenient with lenses which rotate or have a moving AF ring like the Tamron 17-50mm...
damn..was gonna make one for my tammy

gr2k
simple. just design the inner diameter to be slightly larger than your lens diameter, and you wont have any probs with the barrel rotating in and out :D

ahhh..i actually thought of measuring it with the lens hood on :P so i'll stick it to the lens hood instead!
gonna try it out this afternoon..thx for the great DIY guide!
UPDATE:
finished my ring flash in about 2 hrs+ and here's what it looks like!

it's rather bulky and flimsy attached to the lens so i use an AS-19 Speedlight stand with the ring flash instead..thankfully i have built-in Commander so i dont need a cord...
the thing i like most about it is i get nice rings in the eyes when shooting close-up portrait, all else i'd rather do with Wireless bouncing off the wall/board/stuff... :P
My verdict: Was it worth it?
Definately..
1. You get much softer and more light coverage from this rather than a regular white card diffuser (too strong/narrow coverage)..
2. You get nice rings in eyes (close-up portrait)!!!!
3. You could always add tracing/mahjongg paper in the front (as a diffuser) if the light's too uneven :)
thx for the great guide jayhan! (srry la no royalty :P)

Great work.
I've done something like this as well, but too bulky to bring around. :p
Here's my lousy "Ring Flash" :

Made up from a baldi, some Al foil paper and a stryrofoam cup as center diffuser. LOL

That's not a ring flash either, it's a beauty dish.
Nice design though :D

This is the result. My lovely wife.
:D
Excellent! I love the smooth fall-off a beauty dish gives, potatoe uses one to great effect too.
I've been meaning to make one for about 2 years...
Maybe it's time for a trip to Jusco and buy some parts :D
