I am planning to replace my Tamron AF 17-50mm f/2.8 SP Di II XR with a Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM.

I need faster AF speed, f/2.8 and IS for low-light shooting.

Btw, I have a 400d.

Canon EF 17-40mm f/4 L USM = no IS and 1 stop slower.
Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L USM = no IS and not wide enough with the 1.6x crop factor.

Do you think that I am making the right choice?

The 17-55mm f/2.8 IS is a really good lens for a non-L.

The only download is it's not suitable for full frame if you are thinking of heading that direction you'd be better off with the 17-40mm f/4 or the 16-35mm f/2.8 MKII.

The price for the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM is RM3900.

The hood costs an extra RM100.

I tested the Canon EF-S 17- 55mm f/2.8,
the image sharpness of this lens is not as sharp as Tamron though;
ended up I just bought the Tammy for myself instead a Canon EF-S 17- 55;
Tammy only a bit lack of focusing motor noise and focusing speed, after all, it's still a 'Best Consumer' lens.:):):):)

I think I saw somewhere that the EF-S 17-55mm f2.8 IS USM cost around RM3300-3400 including the hood.

I've personally tested this unit before, and also the Tamron as well as the SIGMA version. However, I cant help but disagree with twsttl that the Tamron could outperform this EF-S.

17-55mm f2.8 IS is sharp from corner to corner. The important thing is not only sharpness, but other optical issues such as chromatic abberations, vignetting, fringes etc etc, which is controlled very very well on this piece of glass. If I were to compare image quality, I'll anytime push it up against its big brother the 24-70mm f2.8L anytime! I do get some vignetting when on the wide side (wide open at f2.8) with stacking up filters though; then again, all 17mm (or 18mm) wide end that I've tested have the same issue. If there is anything that I would complain about this lens, it would be the extending of the barrel during zoom, and also the stupid price it comes with without a hood! USM is the cream on the top of it, and the 3 stop IS (yes its a 3-STOP Image Stabalisation!!) just adds another layer of honey all over it! :P

I'm definitely getting this baby when I go back and take a day visit to Singapore.

The only down side is that you can't go FF someday.

That is what you need to consider when buying EF-S lens, other than that the 17-55mm is a super lens despite of no L :P

Sometimes I wonder... when our Nikon brethrens can survive on their 1.5x FOVCF why do canon users worry so much about upgrades to FF lol. Just buy and use and shoot more 1st. Upgrades later only think la... and moreover, its not like most of us can afford a 5D or its similar brothers in the FF league.

And even if upgrade is an issue with the acquisition of this lens, one can always sell it off. The 17-55 is one of those lenses which can hold its prices pretty well.

twsttl : yes im sure the tammy 17-50mm f2.8 is a good piece of glass. Sharp from corner to corner wide open - i dont doubt that. Thing is, with all the features on the EF-S 17-55mm I think its far more superior than the Tammy. I think its of different league to compare these two.

When you go FF, your set of lenses will be different.:D
That time will be 16-35mm F2.8L, 24-70mm F2.8L, 70-200mm F2.8L IS.:D
