Hi people,
I have a question to ask here. I have never shoot an event before and yesterday, I was asked to shoot an archery event host by my fren at his shop. Going to shoot for FOC for him but my equipment are limited. The situation is like this.
1. No flash is allowed.
2. I don't have a very big aparture lens to cater as its an indoor archery event.
3. What kind of setup which is appropriate for this kind of event? Judging from the lens that I own, I have a 18-200VR, 50mm and a SP90.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Regards.

My opinion, borrow your friends lens for maximum arperture.
other alternative, use high ISO setting to get more light.
Im sure the lighting in the place is good enuf ma...becoz this is archery event...

With no flash that's tough.
The VR lens won't really help as it's not handshake that will be your problem, it'll be getting a fast enough shutter speed.
The ideal lens for this kind of thing would be something like the 135mm f/2.0.
Second best would be any f/2.8 lens or faster (70-200mm f/2.8 VR would be great)
The 50mm (at around f/2.2) would be the best choice, but the focal range is a bit limiting, so you'll have to get quite close.
You can try the SP90 at f/2.8 and ISO 400-560 and see if you can free the action.
It's hard to say though as it may be very well lit.

hehe... arhery event is not properly lit. The lanes side is actually dimmed lighting. Only the score board and the target sheet area is properly well lit.
Borrowing lens, I am not so sure. Big aparture size lens aint cheap and I don think there will be anyone kind enough to loan me.

Thanks ST. Tonight I will go over for archery. Will bring along my VR and 50mm to try see if I can take any decent picture with them. If it works on VR, then I will use it. If not, I will follow your advice on using the 50mm and 90mm.
Dear all,
I fear my pocket will burn another hole. I think 17-50 F2.8 is the next to come lens for future shooting on events, HaiH.
Appreciate alot on the suggestion. :D cheers and God bless.

Not only do you need a very fast lens, you also need along lens. I assume you will not be allowed to go near the contestant for obvious reasons.
Get the 200mm f/2.
Seriously the 85mm f/1.4 may be OK and you'll get a full body shot but no close ups. 70-200mm f/2.8 with the ISO boosted as high as you can may also do the trick.

Noordin, I tried to test shoot yesterday nite with 50mm and SP90 at an avg of F2.8 to 3.5 and seems like good but with ISO800, I get grainy pictures which is very annoying. All my shots were done in RAW. The avg shutter speed that I can squeeze out from it is only at the avg of 40 to 60. As usual, the lanes for the contestant is very dark but not the target area. Most of the picture turns out fine with ISO800 but once I drop it to 400, I can only shoot at Aparture priority at shutter speed of 1/10 or less. Bum me, I tried another setting to push the Shutter priority mode to shoot at a 1/60, it turns out to be a disappointing effect. So now, I am clueless. With wide open, these shots are like that liao. Can't imagine using the 18-200VR there. LOL
Any valuable advice is most appreciated.

Hi there, seems to me that you already know the solution but its just that you do not have the equipments for it. The best thing u can do is boost up your ISO settings and u may wanna consider shooting RAW so that you have more options during PP.
OR
Buy more gears!!!! kekekekeke

Thanks for the advice. I did shot and indeed all shots are taken in RAW format. The problem with it is that, it is grainy with high ISO, not the equipment. I tried to test out using 50mm prime to see if I shoot in wide open will help to get a clearer picture or not. Indeed it helps a lil but ISO 800 is a big disappointment and Shutter speed the best I can squeeze is 1/40 to 1/60. Bum it lower to ISO400, the best I can get is 1/10 to 1/30 which results to double image. All the above settings are shot with F2.8-F3.5. I clearly see that its not due to "getting more gears" issue, but more to the poor lighting over the area. HAIH~!

Tonight will go and test again with 28-70 nikkor lens. I don think its due to the lens issue. That place is like a bunk wiht least light... -.-
