View Full Version : I don't need the 50 f1.2 L

Afterall I have the 50 1.4 already.. spending RM5k on a similar lens? No way..
The reviews say it's not any sharper than 50 1.4 at aperture beyond f 2.8, and between f1.2 to f2.8, it is sharp but not impressively sharp.

This thinking was before i actually played with the real 50 f1.2
I visited one of my photo gangs few days ago, and tested the lens for almost one hour.

Now i cant get it off my head... cant forget most is the bokeh, so much sweeter than 50 1.4.. the built, now the 50 1.4 feels like a cheap toy... at f1.2.. sharp enough..the focusing is fast enough, contrary to some reviews.

Nah i still dont need it! I have other lens that can create that kind of bokeh.. but not at 50mm.. and i need to shoot alot of low light without flash lately.. come on! I'm sure my 50 1.4 can fulfill that.. but i notice the rubber of my 50 1.4 doesnt looked so good anymore..the more i look at it, the more cheap.. i missed the hold of that 50 1.2 L.. ah and i love the diametre of the 1.2...side by side with the 50 1.4 it;s like the big butt of a BMW 7 series against a kancil.. it's like the Tai pao Yip chi Mei standing beside sammy cheng..

yesterday my mind says no, this morning i wake up say yes.. yes no yes no..yes or no?

Anyone has real experience with the 50 1.2 to share? and advice on the current best price now?

Don't torture yourself. Don't prolong the agony. Go get one tomorrow.

Then sell the 50mm f/1.4.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
No.. my 50 f1.4 is not up for sale because.. i resisted successfully against the purchase of the 50 1.2 !!
Not money issue, my waist pack was carrying about 6 to 7k in cash. But during the contemplating period, spent here spent there..tinggal 2k +saja
Then now another fresh 23k cash plus another collection tonight. Dont know the amount yet but probably around 20k at least..
But I dont hav the 16-35 2.8 II yet... the Mark III....

Noooo, i'm diverting the money into my Sg a/c as soon as possible!
Tahan ! Tahan! Tahan!!!! :D

I was recalling and counting the situations where i had wished for an ultrawide lens while waiting for my collection. Now the 16-35 f2.8 II is available everywhere! Unlike the 50 f1.2, it's much harder to resist the temptation as i do not have lens of this focal range.

However i do have a 24-70 2.8 which is quite wide on a FF, and the battle goes on in my head. But i still think i need an ultrawide.. but photography is about how u make use of your available equipment.. but i recall again, there were situations only an ultrawide could produce the effect that i wanted.
Buy or not to buy.. :?

Confused, i take a hug on the collection i just received, hmm.. i felt the kind of warm no other things can give... resistance successful again!

Tahan tahan tahan!!! :drunk:

More lovely than freshly baked cheese cake right? :rasta: That was part of the total collection, I successfully collected the total a few days later. Considering that the debtor was doubtful as he had just closed down his business, the collection was especially "precious" and "lovely".

However, the warm from the hug wasnt very lasting..the image of the 50 1.2 still on and off appearing on my mind. No wonder they called it "poison". And I'm still checking the reviews and sample pics of it on the net, on and off, until I cames accross more and more negative aspects of the 50 1.2. Mainly concerning with AF issue when stopped down under low light, and those sample pics that i came accross were really awfull..

Now I'm checking on the 85 f1.2 II.. the definitive portrait lens as described by Canon. What's so appealling about this lens? Bokeh? Personally i find best bokeh with a longer focal length lens ( like the 135 f2) . Sharpness, i dont think this is one of the sharpest lens. Shooting f 1.2 at close distance, probably only can get the one eye ball in focus..
Not to mention the rather slow AF..

Tahan! tahan! tahan... ta..han... .. ..

anyone knows the current price of the 85 f1.2 II ? :?

But each and every piece is like my blood and flesh.. unless the quality really justifies it, otherwise i dont want to endure the pain from cutting my own flesh.. :P

I'm sure u did some comparison shots on identical subjects btw the two lens, comparing bokeh and sharpness. Please share share the pics, can? :)

Get the 85mm f/1.2 you won't regret :)

If you are on full frame can consider 50mm f/1.2L if you like street kinda stuff, if not you won't use it much.

Better to get 85mm f/1.2L for portraiture, works well on FF and crop.

I know someone who had both and got rid of the 50mm f/1.2 in favour of the 85mm f/1.2.

Ahh... for some unexplained reasons, i trust Shaolin tiger!

Actually I'm begining to rid the 50 1.2 off my head after some negative aspects I read from the net ( together with some awful sample pics), and the 85 f1.2 II begins to dominate my mind for the past few days.

Tah..an..? I think beh tahan liao...

Thanks adnan, the additional "cream" on the 50 f1.2 is obvious. :)

I almost decided to buy the 85 1.2 II but after lots of cold water showers, managed to pull the handbrake on last minute :( it's just too painful to depart with the beloved $$$... maybe I didnt love photography "that" deep afterall.

Besides lotsa icy cold water showers, I also shoot extensively than I usually do with my other seldom used lens to knock the idea of " photopgrahy is more about making use of available lens" into my head,
The result... the 135 f2 turns out to be such a superbly lens. Now I'm even critical of the IQ of my 70-200 2.8 IS

Such is the power of prime, causing the other me to curi-curi peeking at the both the 85 1.2 II and 50 1.2 again..
Now this is real agony..

before i got the 50 1.2, i was also looking at the 85 1.2 II as well. i was bugging the friendly people at the canon shop@the curve plenty of times before i decided on the 50 1.2. felt that the focusing of the 85 1.2 II is a bit slow to my liking although i believe the IQ is slightly better. i felt that the 50 1.2 is a better fit to my 30D, would have chosen 85 1.2 II if i have a 5d...

my advise, don't have to curi-curi anymore, just pick any of the two, you'll never live to regret it...:D

...its like comparing a bmw 530i to a 730li... same engine, same horsepower, but the 5 is lighter, nimbler and more manouverable (would have preferred the M5 though... but 880k was a bit to much for me to convince the finance minister) than the 7 series although the 7 is more comfortable. also the price of 7 series is more.

Anyway, i'm glad to officially announce the end of the much prolonged agony liao!

Not the 1.2 but the cheapo EF 85 f1.8 :D kekeke.. it was just a thin line away when deciding between the 1.2 and the 1.8
Well..i guess i'm really a cheapskate :(
now hopefully i'm a happy cheapskate when i test the lens tonight
