View Full Version : Suggestion for additional lense
Hi guys
Here's what I'm lugging currently
Nikon D50 body
18-200mm VR f3.5-5.6
50mm f1.8
SB-800 Speedlight
So, I'm taking a full breath of fresh air and announcing to myself that my finances are allowing me to get a new lense to add to my collection.
My budget is between RM$1500-2000, so I'd like some suggestions from you guys on what would be a worthwhile buy.
I shoot a lot of events, from weddings to birthday parties and also do some landscape and architecture stuff, so am kinda leaning towards getting a fast lense
I'm open to options of 3rd party lenses as well :D
Thanks!

I second noru's suggestion and to top it up complimenting your 50mm, get yourself a Raynox DCR-250~~ :P I got poisoned to get that after I saw noru's work on macro bug thingy.... :D
Somehow, I felt you are asking for poison instead get getting poisoned by others here... hehehe

Agreed. Tamron SP 17-50 f2.8 excellent lens for events and constant wide aperture. You also can consider the Sigma 18-50 EX Macro but for me, as I started just like you ( Nikon D50 and kit lens) I choosen a Sigma DC 17-70 f2.8-4.5 Macro and it became my workhorse lens since.

another suggestion could be an ultra wide lense,i.e the tokina 12-24 or sigma 10-20.

You can find some of mine here dude:

You can get a good price from Jason at J-one, you can find his details in the forum, get it with a Pro1D UV filter I recommend.

ST, I am wondering with this lens, is it ok to use a step up ring to actually fits in a 72mm CPL? Will it cause vigneting over the edges of pics we take?
Thanks in advance. :D

No it's fine, I use a 67-77mm step-up ring with a 77mm polarizer.

Tamron 17-50/2.8, just got mine yesterday. :D
yup.. it's a good lens.. especially on a new D200 :D
ST : great photos! i added you in my Flickr friends :)
one more thing guys...i already have the Nikkor 18-200mm VR so would you think by getting the Tamron 17-50mm would kinda overlap the Nikkor?
Or does the fast f2.8 really make a significant difference?
thanks again!

The f/2.8 makes a lot of difference when shooting in low light, the VR can help against handshake, but it can't get you a faster shutter speed in low light to freeze action.
The 17-50mm is MUCH sharper than the 18-200mm aswell, it's in a different league.
There are a few other things you can consider too if you don't want to overlap, such as the Tamron SP90mm 1:1 Macro lens if you want to get into Macro (Around RM1400) or the Nikkor 85mm f/1.8D if you love portraiture (Around RM1300).

Couldn't agree more with ST. I am struggling to get more light when I was testing for an indoor function 2 days ago with my 18-200VR. Getting this lens today from a forumer. This lens is Light hungry fella and imagine it chews in light like a hungry dog.... hahaha
hehe ok, that boosted a bit more confidence for it....and guess what, it even crossed my mind that maybe i should sell off my 18-200 VR hehehe
nah, guess i'm keeping it for now
