Currently i have the 85 f1.8...has anybody used both 1.8 and 1.4...is there a big difference in term of image quality that i should get the 1.4. Please advice. Thanks..

Personally I don't find a great deal of difference, the micro contrast on the f/1.4 is better, it has slightly better bokeh and the build quality is better.

I prefer the colour rendition of the f/1.8 over the f/1.4.

Really best for you to try both before considering an upgrade.

is the 85mm f1.4 hard to use? with DOF so shallow..any advise?
i saw one picture from this forum taken from 85 1.4, kid's hair one side brown other side black...aiyoh, susah la.

i'd stick with the f/1.8 if i were you...there's no major difference between the f/1.4

dudes the HN-31 Hood for the Nikon 85mm lens is nutty!!

i am too scared to pasang it. ALthough its actually connected to the filter but damm thing is the dumbest design ever!!

Is there an alternative hood which would work for this lens?

I am scared to use the hood but not using the hood, and leaving this 77mm very expensive glass exposed is another frighting thought!! :run_away: :run_away:

I don't get what you mean, I leave my hood on all the time and have no problems.

Personally I dun see that much difference either, went for the 1.8 bcoz of the colour compared to the 1.4. And both has purple fringing/CA at their widest aperture. But once stopped down.....everything's sharp and CA's gone. Bokeh....well as u all know......'meleleh'. But both great lens tho.

I had the f/1.8 and now the f/1.4. The difference is the f/1.4 allows you to play with the DOF. You can focus on the eyes and have the rest of the face soft. Other than that they perform about the same.

noordin and zamrudku..both of you have used both lense before...any significant difference on focusing speed? my 1.8 seems to hunt sometimes. its okay for normal potrait shoot but its annoying when you miss shoots at wedding.

I don't get what you mean, I leave my hood on all the time and have no problems.

i think its gotta be the make. i dont like metal. Prefer the plastic feel hoods.

The way the hood is mouned to the lens..the screw-in rather than "turn-and-lock" for the newer hoods.

i find the hood also not balanced with the lens and when putting lens in bag, must remove the hood. i don't do this for other lens.

Yah prime lens usually have different hood type as they don't need petal type of wide angle lens.

I find the screw in fine, just make sure your filter is tight enough.

I don't take the hood off, fits in the bag fine, can even put a 50mm on top inside the 85mm hood :D

I feel the f/1.4 focuses faster. The best is if you can try a friend's f/1.4 because only you know the type of situation you'll be using the lens and whether it'll be worth spending that difference. For me I'm glad I changed to the f/1.4 from the f/1.8.

Using f/1.4. Notice the bokeh!

I'm not sure about the hunt.....so far i've used the lens on 2 occasions....once during a model photo shoot done in an outdoor setting....light moderate and the other in low light...in a pub. I didn't encounter hunting.....but I believe the 1.4 should focus faster than the 1.8. Like noordin mentioned.......should find someone to try the 1.4 against the 1.8. Here's the one I had with the 1.8.

very nice as well zamrud. But definitely we can see the bokeh rendition from both lenses are different. This one has a more defined shape compared to the 1.4 which makes the background look like a wallpaper of abstract patterns...

Jayhan....there are no issues with getting the 85mm 1.8 first. I am using it and have been very very satisfied and happy with the colour and shots which are being produced from a lense which costs no more than RM 1500. I hardly ever shoot with 1.8, usually f/2 and smaller...and even at 1.8, it's still hard to handle. So I don't feel limited by not having 1.4. the 1.8 is suffice and safe to say, a very good tool already!

waah andre u r darn poison man
im now contemplating between 85mm f1.8 vs 50mm f1.4 cuz the pricing is about the same (diff of about RM300). and then again, i need to know what i am gonna do with them since i already have a 17-55 and also 70-200

Jayhan...get both.......they serve different purposes... :P

At minimal focusing distance:-

85mm good for mug shots

50mm good for half body portraits

It depends what sort of composition you're looking for...

As for quality wise, I feel the 50mm is better, it is a 1.4 lense after all. it is also a faster lense, I believe 1/60 shots shouldn't result in shake...the 1/60 on an 85mm will.

Nikon's primes in 50mm and 85mm ..1.4 = Pro, 1.8 = Consumer..

Now you know why the price of 1.4 is 3x > 1.8 lenses?

I think it's time for a TT. Haha

85mm f1.4 vs 85mm f1.8... no big different??

Both differences are visible andre....read carefully..:D

But jayhan was having a dilemma on choosing either 50 1.4 or 85 1.8, something i was going through recently as well. I ask him to buy both. Do you agree? Hehehe

85 1.8 got ready buyer anyteime idf he decides to get the 1.4 soon.

50 1.8 - rm 3xx
50 1.4 - rm 9xx-10xx

85 1.8 - Rm 13xx
85 1.4 - rm 33xx

The pro lenses cost 3 times more. Wondered why?

The IQ from the 85mm is far better than the 70-200mm at the same focal length. And there a difference between the f/1.8 and f1.4. The f/1.4 gives better bokeh. I owned both but sold the f/1.8.

Unca Noordin, may i add, the 1.4 gives a very very different slurpyummylicious bokeh compared to the 1.8.

But i no money, so i buy 1.8 oni....still the bokeh is better than any other lenses I had with me...

actually hor...i would skip the 50mm entirely... i owned both the 50mm f/1.4 & 1.8 before (there is an optical difference) and sold them... i would rather go with 35mm f/2 (i still wish i've kept the ais 35mm f/2 that i sold)....if u hv the 85mm...just my dua cent lah... for dslr with 1.5 crop, 50mm seems a bit odd, at least to me....

I remember I read a magazine it says that "some photographers refuse to use their 50mm 1.8 & 85mm 1.8 in front of other photographers, because it's looks cheap, but how rich you are? If you afford the 1.4 just go all out. Honestly, its more on glamour less on IQ, both 1.4 & 1.8 serves very well".

i'm kind of agree to certain level, because some photographers i met b4 have the feeling using Tamron 17-50 & 50mm 1.8 is insults the D300/D3 body.

But I don't care...
