I think most people would recommend a fast lens (f/2.8) rather than something like the 18-200mm VR.
For Canon I'd personally recommend the 17-55mm f/2.8 USM IS lens, even though it's not an L lens it is superb and the IS is useful.
If you are planning on going full frame in the future the 24-105mm might be a good choice, but it's quite expensive but also has IS and a constant f/4.
The third would be also a consideration if you want to go full frame, the 16-35mm MKII.

How much is your budget?
if u insist wanna have a 18-200mm, canon don't have one but sigma have.
If your budget is allow, go for the 17-55mm f/2.8 USM IS lens, it is helpful with the constant f/2.8 and the IS

Well 24-105mm is a very good lens but it's suited for FF as 24 is not really that wide on a crop sensor camera like the 400D/30D plus it's around RM4500.
Also it's not f/2.8 which most consider very important.
Canon doesn't have an all round lens for crop cams like the 18-200mm Nikon brought out, but Tamron and Sigma both have 18-200mm lenses.

well, if u insist only canon lens, save more ;)
you can try to consider 3rd party lens, some of them make good lens, but then what you pay for what you get.
Like ST said, canon don't have all round lens, they want you to purchase more more more and become a lens collector, LOL! :D
Or like azumi said....nikon? :0
but then azumin, from canon to nikon is not an upgrade!:whipped:

what is your budget range you looking for ?
If walk around lens..with affortable price..you can think of 28-135mm IS > http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-28-135mm-f-3.5-5.6-IS-USM-Lens-Review.aspx.
Have you sell off your kitlens ? If not i strongly suggest you NOT to sell it...you might regret later though since it consider a WIDE angle lens also :)
Here the comparison between 24-105L (about Rm4500) vs 28-135 IS (about Rm1600)

for budget option, i always suggest this combo on a 1.6FOVCF of canon's:
SIGMA 18-50mm f2.8
SIGMA 50-150mm f2.8
These 2 lenses practically completes the whole range you will ever need as a hobbyist. A plus side of it is that SIGMA's tend to make their lenses to have that MACRO features too (though a dedicated macro lens is obviously waaaay better, but hey the key word here is BUDGET!)
The above setup is strongly suggested instead of going to the 18-200mm route. Why? Although its a bit troublesome to have to travel around with 2 lenses, the f2.8 it provides throughout is very crucial. Alternatively, you can also opt for the following too:
SIGMA 17-70mm f2.8-4.5
SIGMA 70-200mm f2.8
This will give you a longer range to work with, but the setback is of course the non f2.8 throughout the range of 17mm to 70mm. All these lenses have been generally considered as well above average glasses, and value for money too, by those who have been in DSLR photography long enough.
Good luck!
