Hi, I'm new here and wish to start using DSLR. Now, I wish to get more reviews on Nikon D40 and D60. I do not sure which camera to buy. Normally, I shoot more on food photo as I like to post it into my blog and also I love travelling and always bring my camera with me everyday. But now I am confused with these 2 cameras, which one is better? Nikon D40 is selling RM1888 and D60 RM2388. My budget is in this range. Hope anyone could give me advise.

Can you give me your comments? Thank you.

There's not much difference really, my recommendation would be to buy the D40 and get a good lens and a flash rather than go for the D60.

Some may recommend differently though, it really depends what you consider important.

i agree with ST. But somehow, it depend on your usage as D40 and D60 all use AF-S lens if you wish to have auto focus. Other lens u only can do manual focus which is time consuming when doing so.

The D40 is selling cheaper than 1888 in some places. You may want to check it out.

I believe you should get the D40 as the D60 isn't that much better. Pair that kit combo with an SB400 and u should have, in your hands, quite a good set!

Have fun!

For electronics items, there's a maxim of newer is better.

The D60 has some enhancements over the D40, but not much.

Get the D40 if 1/500 sync-speed is critical for you, and with the money saved for other purchases.

i would say, get a 2nd hand D40 body. then get a flash (SB600). and if the budget permits, get a decent AF-S lens like Nikkor 18-70mm. else get the kit lens would be sufficient.

don't bother getting D60 as it has not much differences.

Take one step at a time. The kit lens supplied with either the D40 or the D60 are equally capable lens.

In fact, it's a good lens to start in learning photography.

thx kiankheong, I do appreciate with your advices. Many people also prefer D40 than D60.

Is it okay if I just purchase the D40 kit only without buying other additional lens nor flash?

You can buy additional flash and lenses later, after you have known which lens is more suitable to your shooting needs.

I'm also using D40. Been with the kit lens for more than a year before purchasing my next lens. I got myself a SB600 flash six months later, for assignment purpose.

If you are on a budget, just get an additional SD card. I got in total 4Gigs.

Yah the kit lens is fine for a start until you know what you need, if you have more budget you can pick a second hand D40, a Nikkor 18-70mm and maybe an SB-600 - you'd be set for most occasions then.

"perfect" lens doesn't really guarantee good & nice photos.

It depend on what is your budget and what is your preference. Some people want everything new and some people dont mind on second hand gadgets.

As what ST quote, that is a good suggestion on the combination for beginner. A second hand 18-70mm lens is better built in quality compare to the kit lens offer 18-55mm. The 18-70mm lens also allow u to have another 15mm focal length to play with.

External flash is depend, and it is not hurry when u getting a dslr c/w a lens.

I think, with your budget, just go to Sungai Wang, and not suitable go to Pertama..

At Sungai Wang, you just go to a photo shop nearby the Shakeys Pizza..There, you can buy D40 for RM 1600, but what's in the box only, not with tripod, bag, etc like other shop..

Flashgun SB 600, I bought there for RM 700..You cn see from my avatar, hehe..Other shop sells around RM 750-888 (silly shop near the fruit stall located at main entrance in front of Lot 10)..The lowest would be RM 730..But that particular shop and the other one, Shangri La Foto sell it for RM 700..2nd hand I don't know the price..

First, think what is your needs towards photography..Then, you can decide what gear you should buy..If you want to skodeng, by the telephoto lens..If you want to do a wedding photography business, find a suitable lens (18-55 or 18-70)..If you want to snap rounded KLCC, buy a fisheye lens..Just joking..
