Deffinately the 50mm, learn composition as it restrict ur view force u to think for better angle before snap

if u want to learn, it's better to start from wide to small tele, something like 18-70mm 3.5-4.5.

By using this kind of lens, you can shoot more. You can try composition from wide to tight

The more you shoot, the more you learn about ur camera. After that only decide to focus on what to shoot, by then only get the lens that is suitable for your usage.

well, that's for me. Different ppl might have different kind of view.

My choice would be the 18-70. It's wide angle end is useful for landscape/group/tight space shots. Used ones are a good buy. BTW, I have one up for sale. ;)

;) if you ask me, i'd rather go with a small prime, i.e. the 50mm f1.8. Your set up will be much smaller and discreet, so you will be more motivated to carry it around and shoot pictures ... hehehehe

Get both lenses as the 50mm is relatively quite cheap. :D

I also say get both. The 50mm 1.8 is cheap but good and the 18-70 is one of the better kit lenses-very sharp.

Actually, you can't really compare both lenses..

It's like comparing a motorcycle and a car.

When it rains, you stay dry inside your car. But you get wet if ur on a motorcycle, so u have to find a way to keep yourself dry. At least in a car, you have the option of just driving on. The only limitation is when there is a flood. That is like a subject so unreachable with 50mm or 70mm focal range and you cannot walk any closer....those are subjects 600 feet away or something.

I don't know how i came up with this sudden analogy....it just came...:bouncing:

From what I've learnt over the past 3 weeks with my 450D Kit, it narrows down to what you really want to learn.

both lens are quite good for learning portraiture and shooting events,
18-70mm can take a group photos, can still be used in cramped situations.
50mm has a nice bokeh effect, but very difficult to use in cramped situations (for me its difficult to do full body photograph)

Still lots to learn with this two lenses... :)

for learning purposes i'd get the 50mm f/1.8...i agree with Alan_drg.

@equinox
a new one is around RM 900+
used one ranges from RM 600-700 depending on condition

if u want the all-rounder lense, then grab the 18-70... This lense have served me well indeed for a few years before I change it to Tokina 16-50mm 2.8 which is better than 18-70 (sorry for frankly speaking, proof me wrong hahaha)
