If a brand new lens in its original box/packing is brought in to Malaysia, will it be subject to tax?
Thanks..

No. No duty on cameras and lenses.
Someone bought a hard to find lens for me from Hong Kong and she just breezed through the customs, no problem at all.

In its original box and packing? wow...wonder if there is any limit on the number of lenses in their original boxes that can be brought in....
If camera lenses are not subject to import duty.. what about sales tax,etc...
Thanks Tuan Noordin..

None. Even cameras and lenses arriving via courier and collected at the customs warehouse in Sepang is not taxed. No import duty, no sales tax. All they wanted was to see that the items are really cameras and lenses. ;)

Not really, it's generally quite a lot cheaper than US here for cameras and lenses apart from when they have special offers.
Accessories and other stuff are much cheaper there due to consolidated market.
HK is only cheaper for SOME items not all.
Some Nikon lenses are cheaper here than HK, some are cheaper in HK. It depends exactly what you are buying.
Remember it's grey...so compare with grey price here not local set price.

ST, you're quite right that it depends on which items. Based on my enquiries, if its the latest models (whether bodies or lenses) then its more expensive compared to Malaysia (grey to grey set),
but once its no longer the latest model, they are heavily discounted.
In my case I'm getting stuff that are not the latest releases, so its a huge savings...even comparing grey to grey sets..
if i'm not mistaken cameras (and a few other electronic items) don't get taxed in malaysia..but IF the customs try to find trouble with you just say its a gift or tell the seller to pack it as a gift due to custom issues..they'll know what to do

Hmmm... looks like you are getting at 70-200mm f2.8? or perhaps 200-400mm? :D
HK is prices are competitive. And yes, no tax.
