Canon - when you focus, the lens barrel won't extend.
Tamron - when you focus, the lens will extend out.

Optically they are about the same, the main advantage the Canon has is internal focus (which is also quieter) and the build quality.
The Tamron is built very well for a 3rd party lens though and comes with a very nicely made lens pouch.
Both are very good, sharp lenses, buy whichever you can afford.
I had the same dilemma for the Tamron vs the Nikkor 105mm VR, I went for the Tamron plus the SB-800 for the same price as the Nikkor.

Sorry ya, need to ask, who is the distributor for Tamron in Msia? All Tamron lens is 1 yr international warranty right?

The old distributor was Tithes, they recently changed over to Futuromic - Yes comes with 1 year warranty.

ST, thanks for the info. I bought mine in sg, and its warranty is by Tithes with 3 years warranty. If it ever breaks down, would Futuromic honour the warranty as well? And about the 3 years warranty by Tithes, is that a marketing gimmick or is it for real?
:)

I wouldn't sell Tamron 90mm SP Macro for the Canon 100mm Macro...no real improvement, only slightly quieter in focus and non-extending barrel.
If you wanna upgrade get the Canon 180mm f/3.5 L Macro lens!

It gives you 1:1 magnification at a much more comfortable working distance, like the best macro lens for Nikon is the 200mm f/4.
You don't have to get so close and scare the bugs away.

I'm assuming that you're talking about the Canon 180mm f3.5L macro. It's a whooping RM5150, according to the Oct 2005 price list in Key Colour, Midvalley. I refer to the link here (http://www.photokaki.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4318). The price in unlikely to change much over time.

The next best option would be Sigma 150mm Macro, which is about the same price as the Canon 100mm!

SP90 = Tamron AF90mm F/2.8 Di Macro lens
Price for SP90 is around RM1300 ~ RM1350 ~ RM 1400. And I know canon EF 100MM is way too expensive... maybe X2 of SP90

:? Really sorry that I cannot answer your question now as I have not own I.... yet.
Plan to buy maybe sometimes end of June or July... if you read the link that I post earlier, the comments that given show that Tamron SP90 can out perform Canon 100mm in terms of image quality !
Within the row of the lenses around 100mm sizes, the Tamron 90 clearly topped all it's competitors, further, is the remarkable sure-footedness of it's AF. Though the Canon, in this comparison performed better than in the "fern test", it does not reach the quality of the Tamron's AF; it's AF problem can be seen at f=11. The clear loser is the Sigma 100, at the edge images are only usable above f=8, in the center at f=5.6. I even tried it by manual focussing, but didn't get better results. At apertures higher than f=16 all "100's" show a remarkable decrease of performance due to diffraction.
Within the180mm row, again the Tamron is king, immaculate from the edge to the center at all apertures. At f=4 the Canon has some weakness at the corner but at f=4 in the center it is perfect. The Sigma is really good in the center at f=5.6, best at f=8, at the edge only good at f=11. Amazingly with the Tamron 180mm as high as f=22 returned some very useable images!.

Because the EF 100 macro has a USM motor inside and does not make loud buzzing noises when it focuses, and the lens does not extend during focusing, 2 issues you may have with the SP90.
I believe the EF 100 macro also has better build quality, so that's what you pay for.

It's a Canon. If any problems, like calibration, arises, you can send your camera-lens combo in to Canon to be tweaked. Canon won't adjust your Tamron for you and Tamron won't adjust your Canon for you.

Yah but Tamron will adjust your Tamron and Canon will adjust your Canon so no problems there :P
If possible test the Tamron at the shop for front and back focus problems. Bring your notebook along too :D.

One more plus point is Canon has FTM (Full Time Manual) focusing.:)

Just got Tamron SP 90 Macro Di for 1.4k at Kelantan local Japan. Nice shot output. Though its focusing sometimes need time. Outdoor fast and accurate. Bugs should go for manual focus. Looks for review on Sigma 70 macro as comparison. Shashinki offered 1575 with 1 year warranty but not local warranty. Here offered me 1850 for local. Choose wisely...

does the SP90 extend very long when focusing? what about the buzzing noise? is it that loud that it will freak out the little critters? or is it bearable?
Crazymalaysian
07-15-2007, 08:53 AM
If you're shooting at 1:1 then you're probably better off using manual focus, or rocking back and forth till you get the optimum focus sweet spot. As such, the loud buzzing noise is probably more of annoying to you than it is to bugs.
I think it extends quite a bit, just something for you to be aware of while approaching some insect.

So far I used my SP90, all I can say is that I am loving it despise the noise and a lil bit of back hunting. There is a trick for faster auto-focus once u get used on how to use it. The noise is not an issue, if you bring along an mp3 player on full blast... :D I am abit deaf so I am not annoyed with its noise... lol

POSITIVE ASPECT VS CANON
SP90macro
-cheaper
-good lens though plasticky
-better review than canon 100
NEGATIVE ASPECT VS CANON
SP90macro
-extended barrel focusing
-buzz motor
Canon100macro
-floating lens/internal focusing
-usm/silent & fast

I think the bottom line is that the quality of pics you can produce from the Tamron is as good if not better than the Canon. Whether you want to pay about RM800 more for a more silent motor and non protruding front end depends on your wallet and the pretige an original Canon has for you.

I fully agree with you. Canon lens more ex by 800 only is ok... nikon users diff comparison with 105VR cost more than 1.2K.... thats y we get SP90 instead. Hope this helps... :D
