Perfect! Just the explanation that I wanted!

But anybody uses softbox for group pictures? My flash is non-controllable and the result using a brolly as attached.

Brolly setup:
40" White shoot through
200watt non adjustable flash bulb
6feet plus, looking downwards.

It's just too bright at the front and not enough light went through the back.
Tried reflective method, the lights too harsh.

Any other way to control the lights emitted manually?

Hito your shutter speed is too high, nothing to do with the diffuser you're using.

Zachs blog is cool, should check out his white backdrop tutorials too.
