I put it up on a lightstand. Wind came, it fell. Kemek. 1st time. (1 of the "blades" broken into 2.

2nd time, I put my camera bag to weight it down. Strong wind came, down it went again and there is no saving the umbrella.

There goes 40 ringgit!!

What do you guys do?

Use bean bag and put it on the feet of the stand. It should be able to hold the stand against strong wind....

Yah I had this a few times..if you notice umbrella is shaped like a parachute - it really catches the freaking wind.

Almost had my SB-800 smashed once, lucky still and umbrella just bent one spoke so I bent it back no probs.

After that I always make sure VALS hang onto the brolly.

If you really need to shoot alone you have to use some heavy sandbag, around 10-15kg will withstand any wind.

10-15 kg will break my back man lugging it around.

What is VALS? My 580 EXII has a big dent in the side after the drop. (there goes the 2nd hand value)

No assistance. All the rest are busy taking photographs.

I'll be visiting DGColor again next sat to get another shoot thru.

Use it only on indoors? That sure eliminates the wind factor.

Bro, I share the same frustration with you. Had the same incident recently. The wind blew off my umbrella on the light stand during an outdoor corporate group photo. The umbrella arms "Kemek", and then I put some bricks and barricaded the foot of the lightstand. The wind blew again, and luckily this time, my partner managed to catch it before it fell again.

Don't know what to say la...if it's gonna happen, it'll happen. The hardest part is to keep my cool infront of the client, as if it was not big deal that my umbrella is now munted.

Always prepare a heavy stuff, or find a big stone to stabilize the stand.

So the lesson here is don't open your umbrella when the wind is strong! :))
