I like it, but are the photos lacking contrast?

Don't think its lack of contrast, doubt the sony sensor would be lacking of any contrast. More to, he was shooting under extreme bright conditions at very big aperture.
Only ND filters and Polariser can help reduce the light and bring back the contrast.

nice set.. but then #2 can be cropped a little as i feel there is to much empty space already.. and then the fence in #4 is a little distraction to my liking.. lol

My comments for you to digest.
First, good use of empty space to bring attention to your main subject. As long as the empty space is made up smooth gradual colours like in #8, 10 and 11, it works very well. But when it's made up of contrasty colours especially bright ones eg in #3, then it's a bit distracting and pulls the eye from the main subject.
The other point is try to adopt the rules of thirds to have a more pleasing compostion. You had done so on half the images posted. But on the other half, the main subject is to central for my liking.
As far as the lack of contrast is concerned, I'm not so worried about that - it depends on the overall impact of the picture. Eg is when you take a picture in the shade, there will be a decided lack of contrast as there is no exceptional highlights. As long as the saturation is light, a lack of contrast is acceptable. Just imagine, if you take a picture in the shade, and the image is contrasty, then the image will look un-natural.
But if the main subject is in the bright sunshine, then it would be natural to have a high contrast with rich shadows and bright highlights (eg #10 and 12). Unless, of course, you have got the exposure in-correct.

I think these images may benefit more from a better separation between the subject and its background.
Go nearer, close-up but not macro. :)
