Recently, I borrowed this third party battery grip from a shopkeeper until original stock arrive. His third party grip is like BG-E2N design and RM200 cheaper. So which one should I get?:?

does the 3rd party battery grip loads the battery from the side way or from the end of grip ?
does it has all the button the original has ? care to tell the brand of the compatible grip?

im a original canon bg-e3 user... i've seen the 3rd party ones... some of them doesn't have the zoom in and out button for photo viewing a.k.a the focus point selection button.... or the AV button which allow u to change the aperture value...
correct me if im wrong.
there's nothing wrong with 3rd party grips..in fact companies such as Phottix make 99% identical ones and they work perfectly fine.
you just need to make sure all the buttons/dials are fully functional as it would be on the original batt grip

i'm a 3rd party BG-E3 battery grip user for about 2 years, still good and has all the function of the original grip. really see no point in buying the original since it's just a piece of plastic and doesnt affect the IQ unlike 3rd party lens.
what i heard is that some compatible BG-E2 battery grip has contact problem but maybe the newer compatible grips has already solved the problem.

you have to consider the quality of the 3rd party grip. If you are ok with it, there should be no issue but IMO always get the original set as you have the assurance of the quality.

Please excuse my ignorance but how useful is a camera grip? Is it better than carrying xtra spare batteries?

well, besides it can load extra battery, when you are shooting something in vertical, you can just use the dial and the shutter on the grip itself... and it gives better hold of feeling of your camera too especially for big hand.
Here's a quote from Wikipedia about the battery grip...
A battery grip also provides a more comfortable and secure way of holding the camera, and usually makes it easier to orient the camera vertically for portrait photography.
