Ahem - did someone mentioned my name?
First, for a male to be underneath - can but rare. If he's a smart one, the male better be on top as the female can kill and eat him up of having sex. Ever heard of the black widow spider who makes a meal out of her hubby after copulation. being on top means the guy is keeping away as far as possible from the jaws of the female.
I agree with OM that the female insect is generally bigger size than the male. This is one of the main clues as to the sex of the insect.
Shaun, the batang thingie is an ovipositor as pointed out by OM. As to whether they're enjoying sex with it, I will have to defer to Khiankhong as I believe he have a degree in biology or something like that. Me? I only study the mating positions of insects vis-a-vis the kamasutra.
But logic says if the female lays eggs thru the ovipositor, then sperm from the male can go thru that tube to fertilise the eggs. Anyway the ovipositor is made up of two or three separate appendages that can un-hinge and open up. So no problem for the male to "poke" inside and enjoy life. But he gotta becare though - some female bug's ovipositor can be used for sawing, drilling thru hard wood and even cutting.
Imagine, Shaun, when you are enjoying life, and the female, being over excited and loses control, cut your batang off.....:D:D
