What kind of defects/problems that you are trying to detect?
Just make sure your camera can do whatever the things that were mentioned in the user manual.

If it's new, why should it have defects? :0

i think i posted a similar thread. so maybe you can check on that plus dead pixels on camera LCD.

Not sure how to check this though. i am sure google will have the answers :D

also, u might wanna check for the infrared port if that matters to you...some units have an extremely unresponsive IR port (referring to ur D40)

Dead pixels are located permanently at its location, and can be remapped, but I don't know the charges after the warranty period has ended.

New cameras shouldn't have dead pixels, else the manufacturer's quality check is really poor. In such case, I will demand a 1 to 1 exchange.

Hot pixels can be reduced by in-camera noise reduction. It occurs during long exposures, when shutter speed is more than 1 second.

Differentiate between these two pixel problems.

New cameras shouldn't have dead pixels.....

actually all new LCDs which include camera screens/cellphones/tv/monitor/blablabla have a chance of having dead pixels..

it's a manufacturing defect and you can get it replaced under warrranty

Yup, demand an exchange under warranty. Their QC ought to be better.
