Thanks noordin. Yep, went backstage.
Managed to get a media pass for this event. And during the boring parts, I went for a coffee and found a group of South Korean girls practising their steps at the back. And They're most happy to show me a few poses. Got some good headshots too. Will post tomorrow.

Hi,klguy...i like ur series too, nice compo..but i found most pic are OOF and i check ur exif, all are using F2.8 shutter speed 250's to 400's, ISO800:?,why not step down to 2stop down F4 or F5 and high ISO like 1000,can get more DOF,bcoz you are in capture the MOVING OBJECT!

Thank you for your comments. In theory, you are quite right to say I should step down and use a higher ISO. But, if you are there yourself, you will understand why I choose my settings as they were. Here's some of the reasons :
1 - the amount of light is not consistent. The lighting changes from second to second just like in a disco. Strobes / spotlights were flashing on and off. One second you can should at 1/200 sec and the next shot the speed drops to 1/20 sec.
2 - sticking to above ISO 1000 will generate more noise - it's a trade-off : more dof or more noise. As a number of my shots are destined for stock agencies, I opted to go for less noise.
3 - the only oof pics I see are that of the South Korean girls - try focusing on red and yellow dresses - most cameras will have a problem focusing on red colours due to a lack of contrast. Besides the girls are whirling extremely fast in addition to the flashing lights.
4 - I decided to use a wide aperture for one very important reason - check the background - it's full of other photogs standing nearby and the brightly lit Abdul Samad Building. I want to throw the distractions in the back out of focus.
5 - I forgot to mention that I'm using my Tamron SP90 macro lens for most of the shots here (that's the longest lens I've got). Being a full-fledged macro lens, the Tammy is notorious for for its slow focusing abilities.

Sure can tumpang lah. And no need for thanks - the pleasure's all mine to shoot together with you guys n gals.
I like your first shot especially the zoom effect. Really brings out the colours and movements. Well done. Pix 2 is also good - nice angle here showing the length of the long long horn. Pity about the potted plants partially blocking the "blower".
Hey, I thought you got more backstage fotos especially of the Korean girls practicing? Come show summor lah. Thanks for sharing.

Shutter speed of 1/200 sec, isn't that overkill?
You may want try slow/rear sync flash, sharp pictures with slight motion blur to capture the actions and dynamics.
By the way, no matter which aperture you choose, your picture will still turn out sharp, unless you are experiencing camera shake. It's just the DOF, but shooting from a far distance, DOF shouldn't be an issue.

Yup, the inconsistent strobes.
Different people shoot differently. I would have lowered the ISO even further. The first picture, klguy even used all the way up to 1/320 sec.

Ok so during lower light your shutter speed drops to 1/3 of a second cos your ISO is too low?
Rather than his is still at 1/20 which is reasonable.
So do you miss the moment and change your settings again? Then change them down again...or use the highest ISO setting you need to maintain a reasonable shutter speed in the darker moments?
I'd go for klguy's way.
And no flash is allowed.

Thanks for the comments everyone.
Kiankheong, I'm not sure that you understood the conditions there. In addition to the stage lights, there are several strobes and spotlights located overhead. And these can come on and off at any time. So too are the coloured gels. If you metered during the time when the strobes are off, then you're gonna get an over-exposed picture when they come on. And I fully agree with Shaolin Tiger - you have notime to switch settings - this is a fast pace event - think action sports.
Also I was surrounded by other press photogs with their big flashes. Now if you go for a slow shutter speed, say 1/20 sec, I can guarantee that you will get washed out faces when the press guys fire their flashes. In the past, I've got too many pix spoiled this way. That's part of the reason for me going for a fairly high minimum shutter speed.
And you missed one of the more important reasons - the background is full of other photogs and the brightly lit SAS building and scaffoldings. No point in going for super sharp dancers when the background detracts from the main subjects. I'll rather go for a bit less sharpness on the main subject, rather than get the image spoilt by the horrible background. Check the background in pix #2, 3, 6, 7 etc. If I did'nt use F2.8, chances are, I would'nt even post these pictures.
And you're quite right - there could be a bit of camera shake - everyone's jostling for angles and space. I was right at the front row of photogs and being pushed by guys from behind. In the Korean dance pix, I think I'm about 15 feet from the nearest dancer. So they could easily move out of the super sharp zone.
kiankheong
08-05-2008, 02:22 PM
I understand your predicament, and how fast-paced the actions were. Perhaps I'm a different type of shooter, in the sense that I prefer the dancers to come within a certain sweet spot before I fire the shutter. Besides, I'm usually in manual mode: I fix my aperture value, and I change my shutter speed fairly quickly.
Now, if the exposure dictates me to shoot at 1/20sec and I'm using a mid-telelens, I rather forget that shot. Else, I just try and push my luck. :P
There's no issue with DOF if you read my statement again. I was referring to ben113 who mentioned getting deeper DOF with f/4 - f/5. DOF isn't an issue when you are shooting from a distance.
If you intend to further blur the background, go nearer, if the crowds and composition allow.

I guess some ppl have their own way of doing things.....I would go with klguy's method anytime....coz sometimes there are too many variables to compensate in those type of situation. Since flash are not allowed...and the gear allows a certain personal settings that that photog prefers, I can understand why it was taken that way.

ST said flash not allowed, klguy didn't use flash but complained of other photogs flashes and on-stage strobes. And nfariz8 was spotted with flash attached.
:?
Excuse me, but when did I complain of other photogs using flashes?
There's no rule stated anywhere by the organisers that flash cannot be used. So do you think I have the right to complain if other photogs chose to use flash? If anyone decided to use his flash, it is his right and I will be in-correct to complain as such.
Do re-read the posting below which was in reply to your query as to why I opted for such a high shutter speed. I merely pointed out that I've had a lot of shots spoiled in the past when I went for low shutter speed.
Having learnt this lesson the hard way, I prefer to go for a high shutter speed so as to minimise the chances of over-exposed shots due to other photogs flashing as I'm shooting.
At no time did I complain about other photogs flash.
A good photographer (not that I'm good) learns from his mistakes. He also assesses the situation in hand, and adjust his methods/settings to suit the shooting enviroment. Having noted the number of press photogs and knowing they will fire their flashes liberally, I choose to adopt a high shutter speed.
And to clarify things further, I do have my flash with me (check out my posting in the events section where I reminded fellow shooters to bring their flashes). However, having checked out the shooting conditions, I chose not to use flash and instead go for capturing the ambience.
A very very poor choice of words, indeed, on your part.

IMHO, I think klguy is not complaining the other photogs of their flashes, he's simply trying to adapt himself to the situation....that's all.
Well, sometimes words do get lost in translation.

Leave it, Kiankheong. ST was not there, and he probably assumed, basing on the fact that I was not using my flash, that flash was not permitted. It's no crime to make such a mistake. Let us not turn this thread into a war of who had made mistakes !!!
