Need some advise..........please!!!!

I am a user of the 400D and have been estatically happy with my toy until it was stolen a week back. :(:(:( Now I am in a dilemma - I need a new camera!!! What should I buy?

1. 400D
2. 30D
3. 5D

My interest is landscape photography - sunrise, sunset, waterfalls, rivers..... I also enjoy macro and potrait. My existing equipments are:

EFS 10-22,
EF24-105
EF70-300
EF100 Macro

The truth is, of the 3 choices, I really like the 5D as its full frame with 12.8 megapixel. Its an expensive buy but its an equipment I can keep without further upgrade as I (at least for now) don't think I will ever need a 1D. The down side is, the 5D is an old model and there are rumours of an upgraded version soon. So what do I do????? :?

If you're not in a hurry to get a replacement, wait till Aug 07. But expect shipment about one month later. Having said that, the 5D is a good buy now at about <RM8K.

Newbie going from entry level to highend or do you think spend on entry level body again then spend on lens only slow upgrade body is better ?

My guess is as good as yours. There are alot of speculation of a 5D/30D/1DsII replacement this coming Aug.

As for the 30D range, Canon has been introducing new cams on a 18 month cycle since the 10D while the 1Ds on a two year cycle. The 30D was announced in mid Feb but I only managed to get the cam two months later. When the 5D was launched, it was priced around RM12-13K. Now it is only less than RM8K which I think is a good time to buy. So expect to pay more than RM10K for the 5D replacement :D.

Very obviously, if u can afford it get the 5D straight away.
And sell the efs 10-22 ( it cannot be used on the 5D)
And sell the 70-300 too( when u are driving a high end car, u dont wanna use cheap tyres. Unless u are the type of people who like to drink expensive wine with a mug).

If a replacement model is to be announced in July, u dont wanna be the tikus putih buying the first batch, u dont wanna pay for a model at the highest price ( and pull your didi later when u want to sell later - in this digital age nobody wanna keep their digital camera body forever, there's no sentimental value in digital)..

can i assume when the replacement of this NEW gear launch around July ~ Sept, there will be a lot of 30D and 5D 2ndhand body in the market ??

is that a good time for newbie/entry level photog to upgrade their gear ??

hmm ...... waiting to see what would be the BIG surprise by Canon :0

u can also consider getting a second hand 350D and wait for a while and see what's up on the 40D by 2 more month time maybe the price drop for 30D also can cover your 350D :P

I'd go for 30D and concentrate on building your lenses and skills.

I second the idea of getting a 2nd hand 350D to practice and shoot more 1st while waiting it out for the storm to calm down on future replacements.

With your preferences and your worry about the model upgrade, then go for a 2nd hand 5D.

Thank you all for your kind advise.

Majority of the recommendations have bias towards the 5D. Infact, I am also bias towards the 5D. :P However, I am also hoping that some of the 1D MKIII technology will spill over to the "new" 5D.....Anti Dust, Digic III, Live View...:)

As such, I have decided to get a second hand 400D while waiting out for the new release......of cause unless there are any kind soul who wants to sell their 5D.....:D:D:D

Cheers!!!

i will ask this first and foremost -

rank in a scale of 1 to 3 (1 to be most important) for the 3 shortlisted model

OR

400D / 30D / 5D, each of the models are from 3 different classes and have their own limitations and offerings. identify which cam fits your shooting style or might fit your shooting style.

this is might be an effective way to quantify your next purchase rather than comparing with "paper values"

if i were you - i would go with what some has suggested - i'll buy a 30D and work to build up my lens. why ? its a mid-range cam that might suit most newbies. 5D might be an overkill for you.

but then again, if you have the monies - no difference. just buy and buy.

if you dont have the extra luggages (your lens) and if you shoot portraits, primarly - i would have poison you to get a D200, a couple of sb800s and a 50mm, a 85mm f1.4 and that (issit) 70-300(?)mm VR lens. yummy.

D200 - mid range price with top end features. what a gem ! (thats is if you can live with the noise level - which is fine by me)

No amount of poison will convert me to Nikon. Don't get me wrong, I believe Nikon MAKES very good cameras but I am a true blue Canon fan. My first camera at the age of 12 was Canon.......and I have stayed with the brand :D

Yeeeehaaaaaaaaaaaa to Canon!!!

thats what i told myself too - before i had a look at D200 and the Dxs blah blah blah. :P

then again, i use canons.

The D200 is a real value cam compared to the 5D. In terms of build quality the Nikon wins by a wide margin. If you have invested so much on Canon lens, there's point looking at the Nikon (as the difference is so marginal).

From my experience, your skill is what matters most.

yes i totally agree - but thats "paper value", sounds logical in writing.

to compliment that statement - feature offerings of your equipment does make a lot of difference (pending on your genre of photography) especially when you are fighting for time, on shoot.

issues sorted out is 1 less item to worry about.
