Image quality should be same. D300 lighter and smaller (plus cheaper). So probably better deal overall.

D3 only if you need extreme speeeeeeed or real rugged construction and don't mind slugging around an emergency0 door stopper...
Or if you want to show off, of course...

Not the best video to watch for D700 users or prospective buyers... ;)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I8tckLRKilw

First, I got the message at 5:45 in the morning so just excuse me for signing and looking all sleepy.

This video is an private announcement that Nikon announced regards of Nikon D700 body only. Nikon did not announce this publicly since they announced it this morning at work.

Read the captions on the video because I won't be answering your comments with questions.

This apply to MOST of the D700's - some D700's are in a good working order.

Nikon announced to pause D700's production to go back to the beginning to repair and fix problems, bugs, and machine errors - such as -

Defective sensor • fails to deliver results without blown highlights at minimum aperture at low ISO • incompatible with Mac OSX 10.5 Leopard • CF door are very fragile • focusing screen is slightly misplaced • AF points will not be able to move around in CL / CH mode • Auto WB (White Balance) fails to change the color temperature when SB-900 have a color temperature filter attached (SB-900 reads the filter to send information to D3-Series / D700 to adjust the white balance) • D700's popup flash is not working properly for Nikon Creative Lighting System as the master flash • high ISO banding appears after ISO 800 • short battery life (expects to have at least 1,500 shots per charge but it dies after 250 shots) • LiveView have wrong shooting modes (It have to be switched - Tripod Mode is Handheld Mode, Handheld Mode is Tripod Mode) • problems with USB Mass Storage option • AI ring (for manual focus lenses) is too stiff • D700's popup flash menu doesn't include "M" (manual flash input) • fails to write RAW data onto card (XMP) • (rare) hot / dead pixels on LCD screen • lens mount is fragile • does not recognize MB-D10 when attached • hot / dead pixels occur at higher ISO's • AF-C tends to back-focus slightly

Might just end up with D700+24-70mm and also 14-24mm (which then I would need to sell the TOKINA 11-16/2.8 and also NIKKOR 17-55/2.8) and a D300+70-200 combo

14-24 is heavier & no filter (widely) available yet.

D700 can hit 8fps with the additionnal battery Grip, MB-D10 with just 8 Sanyo Eneloop Ni-MH batteries........................No need to buy the EN-EL4a Rechargeable Li-ion Battery.
U know how much to spend on this:

Nikon EN-EL4a = RM425x2=RM850
Nikon BL-3 Battery Chamber cover=RM100x2=RM200
Nikon MH-22 Dual Quick Charger=RM645

Total = 850+200+645=RM1695

I buy 8 Eneloop batteries only RM 110
SO RM1695 divide 110 = 15.4
Total eneloop batteries u can get = 15.4*8=123

What you think.......................

If u consider all the range, D3 is still not in the high end list.
Canon Mark 1Ds is the really high camera for the single lens reflex (slr).

If you think more MPixel the better camera then you understood absolutely ZERO about digital photography.

Maybe you should read up a bit on it.

Just a few hints:

- Not all photography is made for the same purpose. Medium format is great for studio, but useless for sports for example.

- Some people need speed, those sports guys for example, and 12MP is plenty to print high-resolution image in any glossy magazine.

- There are good and bad pixels out there. To exaggerate: you could have 120MP of pixels which have an output of just 16 different colors each (4bit). Or 12 Mp with 65,536 color (16bit) output. Which one would give you the better image most likely?

Why I change from Canon to Nikon?
Cause the QI is really depending to my work. I went to Canon heard quarter for advise.....on the full frame camera. They say the best solution for me is mark3 1ds. I decide to look on the Nikon D700.
Nikon can provide me this solution without spend big money for the Mark3 1Ds.

My define high end is the QI base on the megapixel.

Good. Megapixel being the only benchmark then. Stay and be happy with your own definition.
No further comments needed.

As for the original question:

IQ D700 can do whatever D3 can do. So same-same here.

Pro for D3:

- even more rugged construction
- more bragging rights
- faster

Question is if you need those above, most likely not.

Pro for D700:
- much cheaper (more cash for lenses and whatever)
- lighter
- smaller

Most people don't need the extra speed and construction, but lighter, smaller and cheaper are distinct advantages.
So overall D700 makes more sense to me.

I got a D3 and still would get one if I had to choose but for me its the durability. If you could see my old F5 you would know what I mean...MY cameras get no primadoona treatment, they are used as tools.
