I was invited by MediaPlus to attend this grand charity dinner on 9th August 2008. The grand ballroom was filled with celebrities and famous personalities at the impressive Place of the Golden Horses in Kuala Lumpur aptly themed "A Night to Die For"

Soo Wincci, 23, law graduate, was crowned Miss World Malaysia 2008. First runner-up was student Cindy Chen, 24, while model Shereen Kaur, 20 took the third spot.

Soo won RM10,000, a one-year Celebrity Fitness membership, and a RM800 Schwarzenbach gift voucher. She was also appointed to advocate for START Foundation, a charity organisation in aid of the underpriviledged children. Soo was also crowned Miss Talented for being able to sing in five languages.

Very practical as what Alvin explained just now........:D More differentiation of lens choices allow for a range of photography WIDER than the WIDEST OCEAN........

BTW, on the positive side, the compositions are great but best bet for situations of heavy lighting is to try to peg to M mode would be to use between f3.5-4+, shutter speeds around 1/25-1/40 with the aid of a flash (u may try the built-in for a start, if flash shooting is permitted) ;)

Events such as that one where there's low light and crowded need special lenses and different techniques, the best is to learn from someone familiar with that kind of shooting. Join a TT and get some of the sifus to correct your mistakes. That the fastest way to learn.

Well.. we always have to make a choise between F-stops, ISO and Shutter Speed.

If the subject is moving (not F1 type of speed lah, say a catwalk fashion show), Your choice of shutter speed is pretty limited, u don't expect to shoot sharp pics cause you may NOT have camera shake, but your subject MOVES! Most of the time, I'll go for 125-200.

Some says F2.8 is the way to go, but some lens, at F2.8, it might be soft, u may need to push it up to say, F3.5, if not F4....

So most of the time, My most flexible option is ISO. These days, I started with ISO 800 (minimum) and at least F4.0, this will ensure I will have a decent shutter speed.

And always walk around and see where are the lights, try different angles...

My 2 cents ..

Hi Beyond

Sure silverbee.
I shot fully manual on that day. Aperture around f2.8-5.6 depending on how much DOF I need. Shutter speed was around 125-250 depending on how much ambient light I need.
ISO was around 800-1250.
In my opinion, a flash is very important. Almost all of the shots were done with flash. BUt I have seen others doin without flash. But those cam body can tolerate noise up to 6400 ISO. FYI, I suck in flash photography too. But I believe u should practice whenever u get the chance coz I did and I think I did better than few months back.

Timely you should get your hands on an entry level DSLR. You will see the difference. Cheers!

Sigh! DSLR is pretty bulky. Loved my extremely handy G9 but for serious functions or events I will have to follow your advice...
