What do you mean by "fake"? Look up the dictionary for the definition of "fake". It appears that you are jealous and hence misuse terms just because China put on a gold medal performance!
This gonna be my comment too... :P

China can build rockets and send human to outer space..what is organising Olympic game with all the infra-structures as metioned and fake fireworks or whatever....the sky is the limit
EdwinTan

agree with hamazu..
if people can do it, why china do it? there is no exceptional, they are human so are us..
if other people can do it, so does everyone else..just a matter of time..
Like old saying, never judge a book from its cover.
The world has been saying that china is not suitable for olympic..will face shortage of this and that.. and further more with the earthquake ..sichuan earthquake .they manage to break the limit and did their best..
But, would u stop your country from using car to cut down the haze or air pollution just for olympic? they did..
Question - they are not ready? they do not have the building ??
They build it !! and make it special.. ie: bird nest, aquamarine building..
are they special? no.. they are just like any other country..
they are human..just that they are able to break the limit and think out of box
once again, GOOD JOB China..

Former IOC president Juan Antonio Samaranch said on Sunday that he believes the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing would be the best ever in Olympic history.
"I would like to repeat I am sure that the Olympic Games in Beijing will be the best in Olympic history," said Samarach when addressing the opening ceremony of the World Olympic Collectors Fair in the Chinese capital.

In preparation for the huge rush during the games, Beijing's subway system underwent a major expansion which increased its capacity to more than twice its previous size. The previous system was composed of 4 lines and 64 stations. An additional 7 lines and more than 80 new stations were constructed, including a direct link to Beijing Capital International Airport. In the airport itself, 11 unmanned trains, each transporting a maximum of 83 passengers, will expedite the movement of people throughout the new terminal building.[15] Most of them are scheduled to operate from June 30, 2008, one month before the start of the games. In 2007 January, the BOCOG announced that the Metro cars will be fitted with video screens showing the latest news and events during the games. Additionally, cellphone signals would be made available, so that people can use their communication devices in the metro stations or underground.[16] On August 1, Beijing South Railway Station was reopened after two years of construction. The 120-km long Beijing–Tianjin Intercity Rail opened on the same day that connects the new railway station with Olympic co-host city Tianjin with world's fastest scheduled train service at 350 km/h.[17]
According to the General Administration of Civil Aviation of China, a new five-level emergency alert system for extreme weather and security threats will be implemented in the airport. This system is designed to ensure smooth and safe transportation for the estimated 3 million domestic and overseas visitors who will flock to Beijing for the games in 2008 August.[18]
On the ground, Beijing is set to designate 38 official public transit routes that will link the Olympic venues. During the games, 2,500 large-size buses and 4,500 minibuses will be operated by a total of 8,000 drivers to transport people across various venues. Prior to the games, public transport will be optimised in order to reduce the existing 110 overlapping routes.[19]
Athletes, Olympic guests and media will be moved around the city in a fleet of 5,000 Volkswagen "low-emission, low-consumption" vehicles.[20]
Beijing will be implementing a temporary road space rationing based on plate numbers during the Games in order to significantly improve air quality in the city.[21] Under the traffic plan made public on June 20, 2008, the rationing will be enforced for two months, between July 20 to September 20, as the Olympics will begin on August 8, and then will be followed by the 2008 Paralympics, from September 6 until 17.[22][dead link] The restrictions will be in placed on alternate days depending on the plates ending in odd or even numbers. This measure is expected to take 45% of the 3.3 million car fleet off the streets. In addition, 300,000 heavy polluting vehicles will be banned from July 1, and the plan also prohibits access to most vehicles coming from outside Beijing. The boosted public transport network is expected to absorb this additional demand, estimated in more than 4 million extra passengers per day

now not only some of the fireworks footages are fake, the child singing star was a fake too..
BEIJING, Aug 12, 2008 (AFP) - The little girl who starred at the Olympic opening ceremony was miming and only put on stage because the real singer was not considered attractive enough, the show's musical director said.
http://www.asiaone.com/News/Latest%2BNews/Asia/Story/A1Story20080812-81958.html
It's funny ... if China or Asian countries do something like this, they get hit by media, and it's called a "fake".
If some western country does it, then it's called "innovation", and it is cherished and celebrated.
My take: it's a very innovative show they put on, and that's what it is - a show that is darn good too.

Why it was worth the effort to superimpose those fireworks?
Because there will be at least 2 billion people who will be watching the games on TV across the world.
Because even if the papers came up with this, 1 billion people who watched it might not even know it was superimposed.
And the other 1 billion who knows about it might not really care because it was done so well.
And because it created WOWs on at least 1 out of 3 people watching the opening on TV.
So yes, they might be superimposed, but heck, I tot it was one helluva opening!
So the pros do outweigh the cons...thus..worth it..
The only reason these came up on British media was because London is hosting the next Olympics...am i right?
They obviously feel that the standard set by China was really too high and try to disalleviate the success of it.

Fake TV images used because of pollution
Television images of a key part of the Olympic opening ceremony were pre-recorded and cut into live footage of the spectacular because of poor visibility in the city, Olympic organisers conceded Tuesday.
The dramatic giant footprints of fire that appeared to "step" from Tiananmen Square to the northern Beijing Olympic district were pre-prepared, Wang Wei, vice president of the Beijing Olympic organising committee said.
However, he insisted that the fireworks that created the 29 steps had actually exploded on the night and most of the television images used of the ceremony were genuine.
"At the opening ceremony there were actual footprints fired from the south to the north of the city," Wang told reporters.
"However, because of the poor visibility of the night some previously recorded foots may have been used."
Reports in the Beijing Times said that the moment had been expensively faked by a production company, who created a computer-generated version of the stepping fireworks.
The company, Crystal fireworks, used effects to capture the shakiness of filming from a helicopter and even the blurring effect of haze, the newspaper reported, citing the head of the visual effects team for the ceremony.
"Most of the audience thought it was filmed live -- so that was mission accomplished," Gao Xiaolong told the paper.
Wang said only that the footage was "previously recorded" without elaborating.
The spectacular opening ceremony was held last Friday and beamed to audiences across the world, featuring thundering fireworks, hordes of martial arts fighters and a dramatic flame-lighting moment by former gymnast Li Ning.
The day of the ceremony had been blighted by a heavy haze above the National Stadium -- nicknamed the "Bird's Nest" -- which organisers blamed on the high humidity.
It followed days of smog across Beijing, raising fears that the city's notorious pollution could force endurance events to be delayed over concerns about athletes' safety
so, it's true then, part of the fireworks were faked. hey, i don't deny that the opening was grand, but to be partly cheated, it does taste a bit sour in my mouth. i mean, after so many years of olympics this is the first host that partly faked its opening. i mean, if this "faking" thing is continued to be endorsed eventually all hosts will be using CGI and we'll be just watching another star wars movie at future opening of olympic games....heck....no need to spend so much money to build huge stadiums.
with the CGI thingy already done at the opening to wow people and got the praise of the best opening, i wonder how far china would go to claim the title to be "the best host", "the best team", "the best organiser' and errrr..... "the best olympians"??? ..... i hope they don't also "CGI" the results just because of kiasu-ness to be "the best".....
haiyah......

I reckon the pre recording was merely a safety net to ensure that the people around the world get to see something rather than nothing which would really suck for an event of this magnitude..

Something I heard this morning on the radio.
The lady who sang during the opening is not the original singer.
It was said that the original singer was replaced by a new lady who is prettier than the original one.
Discrimination vs. giving better image.

i strongly agree wif karheng, if is for safety reason that the footprints ..is being pre-recorded, then it is acceptable, cause we won't know what will happen ..to the cameraman ..if they were to face some mishap..
by then, don't u think that it will give olympic more interesting title or names?

hehehe.....my mistake. so since partly faking the opening fireworks and singing is ok - "for the sake of safety" - i guess we can expect MORE of this in future international events. and "guess which one is fake" will be the game after every event. hey, there might be even prizes and productions of "the making of......" .....hehehehe

but...
Think...the lighting effect from the drums during the start of the ceremony....Now i've seen the actual thing from Zhang Yi Mou's - Liu San Jie play in China...that is real and the timing everything was due to the meticulous coordination and the amount of practise. Didn't that awe you at the very least?
Why can't people harp on the beautiful parts of the ceremony rather than concentrating on what the organizers did to 'deceive' all the viewers?
