Another open letter? I'm afraid so, as otherwise there will not be a complete closure.
Before anyone start shooting, do allow me to make some clarifications.
There is no animosity or ill feelings between Zumie and me : we hardly ever post in each other's threads and never even met.
So there's no reason for us to be shouting at each other. The only time we debated is when I started the "open letter" thread.
At this point, I would like to say that Zumie had Pm'ed me and I fully accept that there is a mis-understanding. He had graciously apologised but I say "Why apologise? I sought clarifications and you have given your side of the story. I fully accept that there's no ulterior motive behind your actions and you merely wanted a stop to the OT chit-chat. And there being nothing wrong , the need to apologise do not even arise."
That taken care of, I noted that a number of forummers were still not aware of certain issues and hence passed remarks/postings. I do believe that these forummers be made aware of the reasons why I felt compelled to write the open letter.
There actually was a, should I say, clash of opinions between Zumie and Liew, prior to the triggering post. So when Zumie made his post, it is perfectly understandable that Liew jumped to the conclusion that Zumie is picking on him. Hence, liew's reaction in locking the thread.
The way I see it, here are two valuable contributors to the forum, clashing with each other. If either one walks off, it will be a loss to SA. Being concerned over this, I decided to write an open letter, hoping each one will give his side of the story and the other will see that there is no ulterior motive. Sadly, I was mis-understood myself and thereafter certain un-called for remarks were made, adding to the flames.
Like Liew, I too was under the impression that Zumie had abused his authority. You see, even in the courts of law, a Judge is required to recuse himself and not preside over cases where he had a personal interest or where he knows one or the other party.
So the correct thing for Zumie to do in this case, is either to ask another mod to step in and cut out the clowning or put the OT reminder in a more joking manner eg "Hey guys, do keep to the topic otherwise this thread is gonna be longer than a cow's tail" or something like that.
Sadly, Zumie came in with short straight to the point reminder.
People, so now knowing the background to it, is it any surprise that Liew re-acted the way he did? And I too initially felt the same way.
If another mod had step in with exactly the same posting as Zumie made, I truly doubt that Liew would have reacted in the same manner.
In other words, the intention was good, but the execution left a lot to be desired.
Now, it's good to see that the mis-understanding between Zumie and Liew had been laid to rest. I too wish to state here that there's no ill feeling between Zumie and me, either in the past or in the present, so let's move on.
That taken care off, I do wish that certain forummers would, in future, be a bit more careful and think first before passing needless remarks. To those who say that Zumie is just doing his job, I fully accept your postings and opinion and respect you for it. You are fully correct in giving your opinion.
But then there are others who passed un-necessary remarks which does'nt solve the problem but added fuel to the fire. Here I am, trying to difuse the issue and there are others trying to be smart.
To Acidict, you have apologised and retracted your remarks. I salute and respect you for doing so. You are a true gentleman.
And to another forummer, I truly do not understand why you need to make the following remark.
"And I thought I have to attend more English classes for my poor choice of words!"
I do hope the mods will look into this. A case of smart-alecness or the person making this takes delight at seeing me being roasted?
Since I'm an interested party in this matter, I will leave it to the mods.
That said, let us move on.
Thank you everyone, for taking the time to read this.
