View Full Version : How fast is your computer system for photoshop?

I am nursing a terminally ill hard disk & it occurred to me that I might have to retire my old friend - a P3 based setup that's given me good service these few years. Unfortunately the D80 & my itchy fingers are generating more bits & bytes than it can handle.

Here's a test that I stumbled upon to see how fast our systems are for photoshopping:

http://www.retouchartists.com/pages/speedtest.html

I for one don't dare to take the test lest it breaks my old friend's back hahaha. Maybe you guys would like to try it.

btw, it seems to me the serious photochoppers out there use a separate hdd as a scratch disk ... wow! And anyone care to enlighten me about RAID disks?

18 minutes and 19 seconds.

With my brand new laptop...I guess it's not built for speed ahaha.

BTW separate disk wouldn't be recommended for scratch as the data has to traverse the bus, I think most oft recommended is a separate partition.

wahliao weih.. that's long!

Yeah ST, you're a very patient man! Fuzz yours is way up there with the hardhitters ... what's your setup? btw, on the page I gave you guys, there's a link to other people's times and their configurations. Perhaps y'all who dare take the test could share your configurations?

ST, I was thinking 2x 160gb HDDs - systems go onto one and data to the other. Based on what you said, maybe I should partition the systems hdd - what's a good size for something like win xp. I'm also considering xp pro (damn expensive la) cos it can support >2gb ram (I was told). Can the scratch be on the same partition as photoshop/Gimp?

Haha just wanted to test this new laptop, see how bad it was. Wouldn't dare to test the old one.

Yah always partition the HDD, then when you need to reinstall Windows you can just wipe out the partition with the OS and keep all your data intact. I find it better to install some programs on a non-system partition too so I don't lose my Actions etc in Photoshop.

I'd go for 200GB drives now, about the best price per Gig. I'm looking at building a new system, 320GB drives are pretty cheap now :)

XP Pro can support up to 3.5GB of RAM, it's about RM500 right? (OEM Version).

Hoooo wahhhhhh! No sh*t!

Yours a Mac or PC? But but ST mentioned something about going across a bus? Do you have a 3rd disk ie are those two dedicated scratch disks? And are you running CS3? What operating system? I wonder how your system will handle Nikon's NX (the raw thingy)

My friend told me to look at the Intel Core 2 Duo E2160 - performance on a budget apparently. Anyone has any opinion on this one?

me running mac :p

Not dedicated scratch disk, but my mac has 3 internal hard disks inside.

1 primary hard disk, and 2 more scratches... He he..

Kinda powerful actually, but still slow during video editing..

No lucky, I been eating maggi for past 3 months to buy this....I can't stand procesing RAW on my existing setup haha.

Total damage was around RM2700 plus I got some new Logitech Z-2300 speakers, so all together around RM3200.

was going thru the forum looking for computing setup and chanced upon this thread... well.. might as well add here rather than starting a new thread...

I am looking to upgrade my CPU at home... with the current CPU i have, even rotating a picture takes a lifetime.. dare not install anything on it...

Just wondering wat kinda specs i should be looking for? I know that photo editing eats up a lot of space and energy so I am looking for something that might be able to last me for about 2-3 years before needing to upgrade...

looking for something in the region of rm 2k- 2.5k. Nothing too fancy...

any recommendation guy?

thanx...

PS CS3
xp home sp2
pentium 4 cpu 2.66 ghz
2 gig ddr2 ram
40 gb sata h/disk
nvidia px8600 GT display card

Results: 2 min 30 secs

Need help to improve time:-

Will partitioning my existing 40gb sata hard disk for "scratch disks" purpose help?

Will my speed improve if I get another new hard disk and allocate the "scratch disks" to use that new drive?

Many thanks

Maybe upgrade to 3GB RAM, a seperate hard disk might help. But you don't really need much scratch disk unless you're resizing/interpolating to large size.

noted, yup 3 gb is the max that xp home can id , what a waste if i put in 2 pcs of DDR2
