Hi I'm new here.

Going for a diving course next month so planning to get a good camera for underwater shooting. Any suggestions?

I own a Canon Ixus-iZoom but I don't think it's good enough for the purpose.

Oh yeah, I'm a noob shooter so anything too complicated is not for me :P

Any camera is find to start with, most of the Canon's are good.

If I were to recommend though I'd go for a Canon G7 plus the underwater case and an Ikelite external strobe. Should cost around RM3k+ for the setup.

You probably dont wanna get a DSLR and a casing, that's like opening a really expensive can of worms. Olympus used to make good cameras that you could take underwater, guess they'd forgetten that now. :P

a good friend of mine who's a professional photographer decided to take diving as hobby. at first he wanted to buy an underwater housing for his D200 but decided against it due to stiff price and the risk of ruining his bowl of rice (or spoon for the matter). his next choice was olympus due to 2 factors-supposedly the most secured underwater housing and the live view is crucial for underwater. at the end he bought the canon G7 coz the oly underwater kit was out of stock in Malaysia.

he has sample photos and images of how the G7 fits inside the WP-DC11 housing. http://www.flickr.com/photos/scubashot

Oly has a digital PnS that's all weather and can go 30m deep if i'm not wrong...

I first saw it last yr in langkawi when a japanese couple popped out of the water with a camera... I was shocked...

I think i saw 2 available models of the all weather oly's here. However the specs are not as good as a non-all weather PnS.

Other than that, you could also buy a el-cheapo under water cam... I bought a film one arun 7 years ago... can't remember how deep it can go, as i dun dive, but works adequately... I believe it costed me around RM500...

It's 3m (10 feet) it's not good enough for diving, only for snorkelling - the 720SW.

It's shock proof from 5ft too. Image quality isn't great though. Much better to get an Olympus 5060 and an underwater case.

Man that's expensive! Can get a PnS for RM500 now days haha, I think the disposable film cams are less than RM100, but the picture quality is crap and they can only go about 5m aswell, not made for diving.
