dear all,
i am upgrading to either of this camera... am also including 1dmIII in the list as well. if money is NOT the most important criteria in the selection (although it IS still key), what would you guys suggest?
just to give little bit of background about my self...
1. i am NOT a professional photographer.
2. i would categorize myself as a serious amateur photographer
3. i mainly shoot people - my family, travel, macro & golf and horse-sport photography.
4. i have these lenses: 24-70 f2.8L, 70-200 f2.8L IS, 100 f2.8 macro & 50 f1.4 + 580exII flashgun.
5. i just sold my 400d.
thanks,
adlan
and add to that, i am also a gadget freak... what this means is that, if an upgrade of the 30d or the 5d comes along (which i think is just around the corner - in particular the 5d - based on canon's 18 months product cycle), i would probably get them. with this in mind, it would make sense for me to invest in the 1dmIII, as it has only been released. however, for what i shoot, i think 1dmIII is definitely and overkill.

I'd go for 1D MKIII, superb camera you won't regret it, only a couple of thousand more than the 5D anyway.
Unless you want to wait for 1Ds MKIII, but it'll be expensive.
Get the 16-35mm MKII aswell :D

I have been using the 10D and in the process of upgrading to the 5D.
Why? Because I have a 17-35 L. and the 24-85 f/3.5-6.5 and will be getting the 70-200L. It cover most of the ranges that I wanted too. Futhermore I wouldnt want to buy another wide angle lens just to fulfill the crop factors of the 30D.
The 5D will be the ultimate choice for a long term since it is a full frame camera and with the 12 mp, CCD manufacturers are at a full stop in designing a bigger digital recorder. But if money is not of a problem!
Shooting with a bigger image size, I dont have to worry about cropping the images later.
Getting a 30D has and advantage too since digital SLR doesn't last longer than 2 years. So buying a cheap body that last 2 years will make you save some money for a later upgrade for new SLR after 30D!

I think every photog has the same burning question...lol
B4 i bought my 400D, I was looking to get the 5D as a full frame looked tempting. But since i new nuts about taking pics, I decided to get the 400D 1st and buy something else later on whe i improve.
Now after a few months playing with an SLR, I'm most likely to ditch the Full-Frame idea and go for the 1DM3 as it suits my shooting style better. I prefer to shoot portraits and other images in closer view. I don't shoot landscapes, so a wider angle wouldn't be lost on me. Although sometimes I do feel the lack of not getting '24' from my 24-70.
The crop factor between the 1D and 1Ds is not as big as the 400D, so the price difference the 24-70 would still be a decent 31-71 on a 1D, (compared to a 50-110 on a 400D which can be frustrating)
As for 30D and 5D upgrade, noone knows when they will come... the 18months everyone is saying are only guesses... not a hard and fast rule...
But i do see a shift in the DSLR market in the way the companies are positioning their various products... Prices are steadying to what they should be remaining around.
I suggest for you to get the 1DM3, then you know you have the best... Don't gadget freaks always want the best?:D

Actually 5D isn't that good for landscape anyway, it's better to have a crop sensor with higher MP if possible as it will give you greater DOF the DOF on a FF sensor is less so you'll get less detail and clarity in FF for landscape unless you go MF or LF.
5D is best suited for portrait and low light work...other than that it's not so great.

buy buy buy :D
Having used the 30D for slightly more than a year, I do not have much complaints for the price. I use it to shoot mainly portraits and some landscapes. I would upgrade to a 5D for its excellent low noise high ISO performance and 1DsII for its AF and durability. With Full Frame cams, the 85L and the 135L are excellent portraits lenses. Those zoom lenses dun come close even if they have a red ring. :D
The 1DIII is mainly for sports shooters. New features e.g. Live View, 10fps and the auto sensor cleaning function are attractive no doubt.
Since you've used the 400D before, I am pretty sure you'll be able to identify areas you find it limited. (I find the 400D quite a good cam for its image quality though). New digicams are introduced every 18 to 24 months and I believe buying the right tool for your needs are important to get the best bang for your buck even if money is not an issue. From your shooting needs, I suggest that you opt for the 5D as it really value for money at the moment at slightly less than RM8,000. There are lots of speculation a replacement model to be out anytime but I believe it'll cost more than RM10,000 (provided Nikon does not launch a FF model). I hope this helps :)

1D Mk3....it's the only Canon that can make me switch camp. I think that says a lot....

5D= its just an entry level of full frame camera, nothing to shout about this camera(nothing special, only FF), its slower than 30D, 3fps vs 5fps (since u shoot running horse).
get the 1D mark III (with disadvantage of big and heavy, come to think if u carry around for ur travel shoot),but regardless of it, its perfect.
get the 30D, sell off ur 24-70 and get the 16-35 mkII, pm me if u wanna sell off ur 24-70 :P
i might be wrong, but that is what i have in mind. Good luck with making that decission.

some rumours :
Canon gonna launch 3 new camera:
- 1DsMKIII(full frame),must be really expensive,remember 1DsMKII price? :P
-replacement of 30D, with digic III (currently used by 1dmk3 and s5is, so u know how this camera can handle high ISO later on).
-replacement of 5D, to resolve some "issues" with 5D and also gonna use digic III, and i hope its gonna faster than the current one; 3fps. When its really happen, this camera gonna kick @ss..
the last, i might be wrong :partyon:
:P

thanks for the advise guys... have decided to get a 30d first. once the replacement for the 30d/5d comes, we'll decide by then - perhaps i will get the 5d replacement.
based on the 1dmIII's release (it was announced january 07,if i am not mistaken), it will take about 6-8 months from the release announcement date until it arrives in KL. so taking that into consideration, the earliest replacement model for 30d/5d to arrive on our shores will be 6-8 months + the announcement date. i've heard only rumours so far.
thought of getting the 1dmIII, but like i said in my original post, it is an overkill for me however much i try to convince myself otherwise. besides, there are no stock available at the moment. i can't risk it as i have a horse competition - of which my wife will be competing - to shoot in july. like i said, i think i sold my 400d a little too soon.
cheers,
adlan,
p/s: bought the 16-35 f2.8L II with the spare cash... great, great lens. next stop will be upgrading my 50 f1.4 (pm me if anyone is interested) to 50 f1.2L and at the same time will try to convince my wife that the 300 f2.8L is a more worthy investment...:D , than the arabian horse that she has set her eyes on:?

not a neccessity but Canon tends to cramp more features into every preceeding models :) from their point of view its still cheaper than incorporating back a status lcd :D

dear all,
for those who enquired about the 50 f1.4, the item has been sold already. thanks for the interests.
as for the horse competition, it is called the edaran endurance 160km ride. it will be held in lembah bidong, terengganu from the 26th-28th july 2007. this is the first time in its 5 year history that the edaran endurance ride to be held outside the klang valley. it is part of a series competitions organised by the EAM (equestrian association malaysia) sanctioned by FEI (federation equestrian international) leading up to the WORLD ENDURANCE CHAMPIONSHIPS 2008 also to be held in lembah bidong, terengganu. our present king, who is an acclaimed endurance rider himself (he is one of the top riders in malaysia) will be competing in the event.
here are some pictures taken from the kedah international endurance ride 2007 held in march this year.
