hi guys/gals,
my samsung 713n 17" lcd monitor just kaput.....need some recommendation on which lcd monitor to use....my table is not big enough for crt....my expectation is that it can display 1280x1024 resolution, accurate color and 17" would do. i dun need any fanciful functions but good enough for photo editing. i dun print out photos but i send to the lab and also i do not view DVD/movies on it. My main use is photo editing (nikon NX) and simple ms office use.
thanks for any recommendation.

any Dell Ultrasharp monitor will do.
the price also very attractive.
now dell doing some promotions.
actually they been having promos one after another for a while now.
some models even cheaper than previous back-to-back promo.

i think my budget is around Rm1k....i'm looking at viewsonic vg2230 and dell 2007 20" ultra-sharp....i just read that the viewsonic is a 6-bit panel...but not sure abt dell 2007 ultrasharp...
P/S - just found out dell 2007 ultrasharp is an 8-bit panel...

I don't rate Viewsonic any more, although for that budget the 2025 is a good buy.
I'd get the Samsung 22" Widescreen 226BW at around RM1150 for that budget.
That's what I bought and I LOVE it.
The Dell 2007WFP Ultrasharp 20" is also worth a look at around RM1149.

mine is Dell 20" Ultrasharp Widescreen.
so far, so good...
the colors are quite good.
but of course, i'm comparing it with my notebook LCD which definitely out of the league.

Yeah the 2025 is a very good panel, about the best viewsonic has come out with for quite some time.

Dell 20" 2007WFP has panel lottery, that's what I heard.
Check to make sure you get the S-IPS panel supplied by LG-Philips.
The one you don't want is from PVA panel by Samsung.

Not all LCD panels are created equal. So be CAREFUL in your selection. There are three basic types of panels for LCD monitors, TN, VA, and IPS. Of all three only VA and IPS panels can be acceptable for photography.
Most low budget monitors fall short in the following departments:
1)Viewing angles, anything below 170 degrees both horizontal and vertical is not acceptable for serious photo editing.
2)Shaddow detail or deep blacks. Most monitors cannot display deep blacks and some that can, loose in shaddow detail.
3)Brightness levels too high for photo editing. People that work in very bright rooms need the extra brightness most monitors today can offer, but for critical photo editing we should be working in low light environment and the ideal LCD monitor brightness should be well below the 120-140 candelas that is generaly accepted as "normal".
4)Color shifts when viewed at an angle.
Even some good monitors suffer from color shifts when viewed at an angle even if their viewing angle measurments are above 170.
5)Light uniformity and light leakage.
6)Bad pixels. Although even good monitors can have bad pixels usualy the quality control is tighter on the higher level monitors.
7)Color gammut. This should be higher in the list but unless you get a monitor with TN panel and 6bit color the problem will not be that big.
Stick to IPS or VA panels with more than 16milion colors and it will not be your biggest problem.
For a budget of up to RM1500, I would recommend these two monitors:
a. Samsung 970P or 971P
b. HP LP2065 (http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/my/en/sm/WF05a/1090681-1122231-1122231-1122231-1122287-12326628.html?jumpid=oc_R1002_MYENC-001_HP%20LP2065%20Flat%20Panel%20Monitor&lang=en&cc=my) or 2465 (http://search.hp.com/gwmyeng/redirect.html?url=http://h20180.www2.hp.com/apps/Nav?h_client=Z-A-R1002-1%26h_lang=en%26h_cc=my%26h_audience=smb%26h_audie ncerestrict=%26h_product=1844962%26h_pagetype=c-001%26jumpid=oc_R1002_MYENC-001_HP+LP2465+Flat+Panel+Monitor&qt=LP2465&type=HUB&pos=1&key=lp2465&alias=HP+LP2465+Flat+Panel+Monitor+%281844962%29&lc=c-001&series=HP+LP2465+Flat+Panel+Monitor&la=en) (24" & a lot more expensive)
They have been reported to be easily calibrated with Eye One, Spider or Monaco. I own the Viewsonic 2025 & Apple HD Cinema Display 23"... viewsonic cannot give consistent colour & luminance throughout the panel which is a big problem if you plan to use it for colour correction & photo editing. For games or office use, that is not an issue.
To find out what kind of panel a specific LCD monitor uses, enter the model number to this URL:
http://www.flatpanels.dk/panels.php
It will tell you whether it is IPS, VA or TN panels.
Check out this site (http://www.prad.de/en/index.html) on LCD monitor reviews.
Happy shopping!
