Good Day Friends,

I have a question i would like to ask...

I am currently having a D40. One thing i realise about the D40 is that you can only capture part of a picture in focus and the rest would be blurred. How can I capture an image where I want the whole picture still be in focus just like a P&S camera?

Thank you.

Just use a smaller apperture. Try setting your camera to apperture priority and use F11 and above.

What you are referring to is Depth of Field (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Depth_of_field), something that most SLR users consider an advantage as it can be used to make the subject stand out by blurring the background.

If you want a greater Depth of Field (We refer to this commonly as DoF) you need to use a smaller aperture (larger number) like f/11-f/16.

This will render less of the frame blurred and more in focus. Also keep the camera sensor parallel to the object you are taking will help you increase DoF.

It's hard to mimic the effect of a PnS because of the small sensor and the way PnS cameras are designed they are set to make sure everything is in focus.

That's why it's very hard to get Bokeh (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bokeh) or blurred backgrounds with a PnS.

You can read more about this here:
