Can someone with this lens show me a few photos shooting the same subject at f2.8 and f4.
photo at 24mm shot at f2.8
photo at 24mm shot at f4
photo at 70mm shot at f2.8
photo at 70mm shot at f4
I need to find out how big is the difference between f2.8 and f4.
Thank you in advance.

Hi adlan,
Thank you for your quick reply.
Now I have seen the difference between f2.8 and f4, I have to decide on the following lenses:
24-70 F2.8L or
24-105 F4L IS

hi cucubud,
had the same dilemma as you did... 24-70 2.8L, 24-105 4L IS or the 17-55 2.8 IS. chose the 24-70L due to the wider aperture and the L factor and also i was then thinking of the 70-200 2.8L IS as well (which i now am a proud owner) to complement the set. if i did not plan for the 70-200, i would have gotten the 24-105 instead as i believe the IQ at f4 is almost the same + the IS will help somewhat if you're shooting at night.
anyways, i just got myself a 50 1.2L, now this is a different story altogether, great IQ, bokeh etc. i am finding my 24-70 is being used less and less. i have the 50 prime on my body most of the time now. i still believe however, the 24-70 has its advantages especially as an all-in-one walkabout lens.
my advise, plan your system a few steps ahead... don't just buy the lens that will suit your immediate needs. think of your 2nd/3rd/4th lens that you intend to purchase than only make your decision. ask yourself what do you want to do with the lens
happy buying:D

Hi adlan,
Thank you for your tips.
I am looking for a walk about lens for normal use.
If the f2.8 and f4 difference is not very big, then I will go for the 24-105mm.
I find the 24-70mm range is not big enough. That is why I am comparing it with 24-105mm.
If I go with 24-105mm F4L IS, the other lenses I might choose will be:
10-22mm EFS F3.5-4.5
100-400mm F4.5-5.6 L IS
This will make my range from 10mm to 400mm.:D

Just like to add my 0.00000002 cent, u may think the difference btw a 2.8 and f4 is no big deal but i often find myself in situations where the f2.8 only "barely fast enough" get the shot. Having a f4 would be disastrous.
And according to the professionals, more elements in a lens would degrade the IQ ( having the IS ) beside the fact that a higher quality glass is required to build a faster glass.
And the cheaper 400 f5.6 is far more superior than the very expensive 100-400 L
The efs 10-22 is a good lens, if u dont mind the efs.. maybe u might also want to consider the efs 17-55 2.8 IS. Its sharpness will blow away the 24-70 and 24-105 easily on a 1.6 cropped body.
It's a superbly lens, only weakness is that u might have to live with its dust sucking ability :D
I would go for the 24 -70L for the following reasons:
- sharper lens link (http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=355&Camera=9&FLI=0&API=0&LensComp=101&CameraComp=9&FLIComp=0&APIComp=2)
- extra stop
- more pleasing bokeh at 2.8
The 24 -105L on the other hand has its advantages also:
- lighter
- extra 35mm focal lenght
- 3 stop IS (but dun forget IS does not help if the subject isn't stationery)
I agree with BCS on the 10-22 and the 400f5.6L. You dun really a lens/lenses to cover the entire focal lenght. Try using different lenses for different purposes if you want to maximise IQ. BTW, you'll be amazed what a 50mm 1.8/1.4 can do. You dun really need those L lenses sometimes.

I love both my 24-70 and 70-200 2.8 L's...
Especially useful in low light situations...

i'd go for 24 105.
smaller, lighter, IS, reach.
the 1 stop smaller aperture is the only disadvantage but with digital technology getting better, u mite just need to bump up the iso to compensate somewhat.
sharpness argument between 2470 and 24105 is moot imho if ure shooting with 1.6x crop, altho i tot i read sumwhere 24105 is better at sharpness and contrast.
about the bokeh... get a 50 1.4 or 85 1.8 if u going to shoot potrait. anyway, the greater reach at 105 u can somewhat compensate the bokeh loss of 1 stop.

Thank you for your input, Bigcrapshooter.
From the samples photos provided by wanadlan, I find that the background blur is not that bad at f4 as compared to f2.8 on the 24mm range.
At 70mm range, maybe the photos didn't show much but it looks like very little difference.
Maybe someone can show me more comparison photos between f2.8 and f4 on the same subject.:D
I am depending on those sample photos to make a decision.:D
I have had the 17-40 F4L lens before. I find its range is too short for my daily use. Eventually, I sold this lens and looking for a longer range. That's how the 24-70mm F2.8L and 24-105mm F4L IS come into the picture.
More inputs are welcome.

Hi,
I were having the same dilemma a while back i.e. whether to buy a 24-70 or a 24-105 to replace the kit lens as my walkabout lens. I already have the EF-S 10-22 and a 70-200 f2.8 IS so either lens would compliment nicely.
After some thoughts and trying out, I settled for a 24-105. It's cheaper, have a longer focal length and with my style of shooting, I can for go the f2.8 factor but I need the IS. Just happen to have a friend going to HK at the time so I "tumpang" him to buy for me and got a nice bargain for it. The lens came with international warranty. The lens stays on my camera most of the time now.

I called up Canon Marketing Malaysia to enquire on the International Warranty thing.
They said they don't recognise the International Warranty.
Anybody heard any other version?

canon cross sensor autofocus will only work with lens faster than f2.8.... if u r using 1 D mark III, u cannot use all 19 cross sensor autofocus
for camera like 5d, 30d n 400d (my current camera) onli got single cross autofocus will onli work with f2.8 or faster lenses....
how good is the cross sensor autofocus?... canon say hor... better accuracy and faster focus... true or not :? ... u can try both 24-70 2.8L n 24-105 f4 L IS ... please do let me know the result horr..... kekeke

I think only the centre focusing point will work for F2.8 lenses.
What if you use the side focusing points. Will the camera focus faster and more accurately?

Canon Marketing (M) S/B warranty for locally sold photography equipment covers Malaysia, Australia and New Zealand ( from what i understand as an ex-canon employee)
Eventhough Canon is a global company each country handles it own p/l and warranties adds to cost less there are existing reciprocating RMA between the mentioned countires above.

This is what i heard also, that's why don't recommend ppl go get lens from oversea even it's slightly cheaper.

well, the side focus onli uses linear auto-focus.. well technically is not tat accurate n slightly slower...
err... good example would b.. 350d... all linear 7 point auto-focus onli.... so far never really tried 350d... so i also dun know how slow or fast is linear auto-focus.. hehe..

cucubud, sorry to budge in but I want to ask Charles here regarding the warranty. By the way, I am also looking for a lens but a 24mm wouldn;t be wide enough for me on a 1.6crop body.
Anyway, CHarles.... Does our Malaysia warranty cover lenses bought in Singapore? I've checked their prices, and some of them are substantially cheaper than over here....
thanks,.....
