Hi,
After seeing so many wonderful shots taken with a Raynox DCR-250, I wonder if I can use it on my EF 100mm Macro lens? If yes, what kind of magnification can I expect from this combo? Lastly, where can I buy this locally in Malaysia esp. in Klang Valley and how much?
I actually already have a Canon 500D closeup adapter and am thinking to get the Kenko extension tube set but am now wondering if getting the Raynox is cheaper and offer better magnification.
Tq in advance for any assistance.

Yes you can use it, it supports up to 67mm filter threads and your lens is 58mm I believe.
You can't buy it locally in Malaysia right now (although we are trying to arrange it).
But you can buy it online from Singapore here:

The Raynox will give MUCH better results than the 500D, you can still get Extension tubes and a TC though for ultra magnification.
If you want to push it to the limits though I recommend you get a MP-E65 macro lens with 5:1 mag.

Thanks so much ST. I love to get one if anybody is arranging a group buy soon. I have considered the MP-E 65mm too more than a year ago and even had paid a deposit to a well known camera store to get them to order one for me. The store however refunded me the deposit a few months later as they said Canon Malaysia do not have stock and somehow can't bring in any unit from Japan (no longer in production?). :(
But thinking back, that may have been a blessing for me since the lens can be quite difficult to handle from what I read and need serious $$$ invested in a good/stable macro focusing rail/ring flashes/etc. The Raynox probably suited me better for occasional butt shots of insects and tiny flowers. :)
As for using a combination of Extension tubes, EF 100mm Macro & 500D, I read we can achieve more than 2.75 lifesize ratio as per : http://nocroppingzone.blogspot.com/2007/06/bazooka.html

One problem with the raynox is that you get a fixed working distance, it will greatly reduce your working distance and you'll have to get quite close. I usually shoot at about 10cm away. If you'd like to test mine, come by a TT or an outing and I'll bring it along for you to try. I'm not sure exactly how much magnification you'll get with it and the 100 macro, but it should be slightly below 2 times I believe.
Also, if you cant handle 1:1 with your macro lens I suggest you perfect your macro skills before adding diopters. :D

I've just ordered one, hopefully it'll arrive before the Butterfly Park trip so I can practise with it :D
Sadly no tripods allowed inside tho.

Thanks for the offer crazymalaysian. I'll try to make it to one of the TT one of these days. If it's only less than 2x lifesize, I think I'll get the Keko extension tube set lah.
I have done a lot of macro shots but mostly orchids. They're much easier since they didn't fly away though. :) I tried taking photos of insect but at 1:1, tak shiok lah. My macro on orchids : http://zanaf.dyndns.biz
