The expression of this girl's face is beautiful. Could have been better if you would have cropped in tighter to avoid the rather distracting BG, as well as rotate it a lil bit. The door frame (which is colorful) kinda senget does take the viewers eyes away a bit

Yah actually both is on purpose, to give some more emotion to the scene, and give meaning to the story. For me that is the purpose of street photography, if you completely eliminate the surroundings the child could be anywhere.

For me the essence of street photography is to capture a purpose or object within it's surroundings and have the surroundings enable the emotion and portray the story.

For me the 2 elements you have mentioned are purposely in the picture, the senget frame shows life in the street is not perfect, it is crooked, warn and bent, but you can still lean on it.

And the hand shows even though the child might appear alone, someone is near by who cares, someone watching out for the child.

That's the story I see.

An excellent explanation by ST on street photography.

However, to my untrained eyes, there seems to be too much focus on the child that it doesn't look like a street photograph and looks more like a portriat. Perhaps, more of the surroundings ought to be been in the picture ?

That's something I considered too, perhaps I'll produce another version and try out that kind of concept.

Thanks Kingsley, well I guess you could call it street portraiture, the focus is the child with just a hint of the surroundings to frame and give spirit to the photograph.
