Nice display of lights ... or so i thought

Well it was frustrating night as I missed the fireworks display for Bon Odori 2007 event in Penang. So there goes my 1st attempt at shooting fireworks!

So I went around the four balconies of my office and shot everything and anything out of frustration. Out of all the shots I took, I thought these 2 looked nice so here they are (the rest are just blurred!! yes .. even with tripod ... *noob alert*).

Is there any way I could improve shots like these (shutter speed,aperture, photo editing etc.)? C & C is pretty much welcomed.

use a remote shutter release. ;)

use self-timer if u don't have the remote/cable release. it will help.
and about the shots they can use a little more contrast.
play around with contrast and saturation.

Those with timers are the ones that turned out fine. I'll try and play around with the contrast and saturation later when I get back from work. Got kinda lost when I try to make the best out of the pictures. Thanks for your pointer :D

#2 is nice !

I think pictures like these are best taken just before sunrise or just after sunset when the sky has a bit more color, and the lights are still on.

Since your pictures do feature the sea, if the sky is colored, there would be some reflections too, so it won't be all black.

But of course, we're either eating dinner or still snoozing at those times ... :D

And make sure your tripod is very sturdy, don't extend the top section.

Focus about 1/3 into the scene for the best results and use lowest ISO.

Looks nice though, but I think shooting at golden hour would be best - the hour after the sun starts setting. About 6.45-7.45 now I think.

Think my eyes or my head needs to be checked :P seems like I like to take slightly senget pictures. I have a few senget and blur pics to go with these 2 as well. Need to practise more.

I do take sunset and sunrise shots. Just that with my current skill(if u can consider it a skill :P) I can't get any nice shots yet. Need to shoot more. I come office at 7.30 am to get sunrise shots and stay back after work to get sunset shots so timing should be a problem :D

Would hanging a weight at the centre of the tripod help make it sturdier as well? Think i read about it somewhere. As for the golden shots, I'll probably try later as currently its either rain or cloudy in the evening.
