View Full Version : Do Not Use Eclipse on your D70/s, D80, M8, 5D, IDIII, 400D and Alpha 100
Apparently, you should avoid cleaning your sensor with the Eclipse fluid for certain models and use E2 instead. Here 's the recommendation from Photosol, the manufacturer of Eclipse and E2 http://www.photosol.com/cameras_bymfg.html

thank you for the warning
According to Photosol, E2 is for Tin Oxide coated sensors. A search in wikipedia revealed that tin oxide is used for optical coatings, most notably infrared-reflecting coatings (hot mirrors).
This coincides with 5D's white paper which illustrates the front assembly is the dichroic mirror (reflects infrared rays). Hence, I believe new cams are sporting this design instead of the glass covers in front of the sensors which is safe for wet cleaning with Eclipse fluid.
According to the 5D white paper,
"While other cameras, such as the EOS 20D camera, have three crystal plates, the EOS 5D model’s filter has one independent crystal plate doing double duty as the cover glass. This reduces cost without affecting the filter’s performance."

I have read from another forum where one 5D owner cleaned his 5D sensor for the second time and stripped away the coating. After cleaning, he was getting pink patches on his photos where the coating was lifted. That cost him almost USD500 to repair!
Looks like the coating is fragile and you should be very careful wet cleaning it yourself. Maybe it is better to send them back to the manufacturer for wet cleaning afterall.
