Hi everyone ,

I'm pretty new in photography here, there am seeking some advice from you all. Just wondering will SB400 sufficient for a newbie like me who dun often shoot indoor? Or i should jump straight into a SB600??
My budget currently is quite limited. Maybe around Rm400-500 .
Are there any 3rd party Flash unit that are cheaper but has the performance of the SB600 ??

Thanks. :)

Add a little more and get an SB-600 - it's worth it!

i was in the same shoe with you a few months ago. After all, i had decided to get myself a SB-600. Of course, if you got the budget, get the biggest flash which is sb800...:D

But in your case, getting a sb-600 will be more versatile. When you shooting in portrait mode, you can't bounce the flash with ceiling if you're using a sb400. Save a little more like what ST said, and get sb600. *poison*

When you have budget next time, you can get the SB-800... and play with the CLS, if you want.

:D:D

I would suggest you store instant noodles @ your room, the cheapest one...buy 30 eggs to put in the fridge...then buy the flash.. and eat instant noodle everyday... :tongue_roll: anyway, just joking...

i think you can get it with some effort, maybe a matter of time? Kindly post WTB in buy sell section and bet the luck. Or you can try Jone see if they got any 2nd hand unit. If i'm not mistaken there is someone selling @ rm650 for the 2nd hand unit....anyway, Good Luck for your search!!

May your wallet stay fat and get what you WANT instead of what you NEED!!:P:D

Dun worry. saving money for gears already in process. TOo much poison around. if dun save , how to get those things. ;)
Thanks for your luck. hope to find 1 soon.

BTW , how come SB400 cannot bounce off ceilling ?? i thought it can also tilt 90 deg .. no ??

ops...sorry i don't explain it clearly.

Actually, you can tilt it to 90 degree if you shoot horizontally. but when vertically you need to bounce the wall... This is the major disadvantage of the sb-400....

initially, i thought that sb400 would be enough for me. Borrow it from a friend who bundle it with P5000. After that feel like not enough. Especially when i have ceiling and the wall is way far from me. Then decided to go to sb-600.... well, no regret for it.

But after some while, i see people playing with CLS. Ops...this really poison me. This make me feel to get another unit of sb800 to go with my sb600. hahah... what i can say, it is just too poisoning.

Tumpang a bit here since I have a nearly similar situation. In such a situation where budget is a constraint, would getting a 3rd party flash (which supposedly is as good as SB800 and only costs approx half the price of a new SB600 - Quality and functionality not proven since I do not know how to actually spot the difference) be worth it or is SB600 still worth the wait?

Well seen as though CLS and flash is where Nikon excels, would you trust a third party?

Unless you the third party is specialist like Quantum, which costs way more than Nikon flashes...I'd stick to Nikon all the way when it comes to Speedlights.

Unless you plan to use full manual for something like Macro, then a Sunpak or Sigma will be fine.

Cool. Thank you. At least that clears the air for me on the difference between a no-name 3rd party and a speedlite. Never heard or could never google out the 3rd party brand out so I guess its one of those 'budget' brands. Guess I'll have to save up for the SB600 then :rasta:

Let me add to the poison. :D

I've seen photog on flicker who uses 2 flashes just for macro. SB800 on body, as fill, and SB600 to the left. Someone by the handle of Brian D, i think...:D

So don't worry. Just get the SB600 first. Then the SB800 later..:P

SB-600 for sure. don't waste money on SB-400. not worth it.
and don't waste money on cheap third party flashguns.
i've tried CLS with a SIGMA flashgun (not mine btw), and it was either out of sync or not triggered at all (eventho' in-line).
read the manual, and it was like 1000 steps to set it for CLS (ok.. i exxagerate!).

just save a bit more, and get the SB-600. worth it. ;)

Rule of thumb - go for the bigger unit.

And never buy a third party unit because the system is not synchronised with your camera and may cause damage.

ShaolinTiger

I bought my SB-600 from Jone at RM7xx.

You can try there, don't forget to mention you are from Shutter Asia :)

tumpang thread also ar sry :P Can some1 explain what is CLS ? how to "play" with it ?

And is it true that SB-400 is about the same as the internal flash =.=" I heard the SB-400 is really not worth getting ... what about a comparison between the 600 and 800 ? CLS really fun to play ? :P

ND40
08-15-2007, 07:28 PM
To play with CLS, 1st you need atleast a flash + a commander. OR 2 flashes and one of them with build in commander....

you can have one commander on your camera, and 2 sb600....

You can also have a SB800(come with built-in commander) on your camera and one sb600 else where.

If you have a D80 or above, you can trigger sb600 or 800.... because they have built-in commander also.

By the way,.. CLS = Creative Lighting System.

Basically what you need is a commander and at least 1 flash to play with it..:D

zomg too confusing lol .... i guess im not up to that level yet :P so for normal portraiture ... SB600 is good enuff ?

Oh . Thanks for the info ND40 . I thought that an external commander unit is always needed to trigger the slave unit.

today i learn a new thing again. :)

ShaolinTiger
08-15-2007, 07:42 PM
I use the built in commander on my D200 I can then control 2 separate channels, 1 for my SB-800 off camera and 1 SB-600 off camera. I can control both of these flashes separately from my camera menu.

I can then control a 3rd/4th etc SB-800 on optical slave mode with manual settings.

You can do similar things with China radio triggers or Pocket Wizards.

no problem, we are learning everyday from each other. By the way, this thread become a Nikon Speedlight poisoning thread already.

By the way, anyone where i can get the China Made wireless trigger? i saw someone selling it in the forum but i would like to get a new 1. Any idea? i had sms Jone but they don't carry it. Any place that nearest to Subang Jaya selling it?

not sure what u meant but i used my sb600 and friend's sigma flashgun as slave and triggered them using the built in commander mode.
it is possible but it require 1000 steps to set it up (i'm exxagerating it again!).
not worth it to get 3rd party flashgun while u got Nikon in your hand that can offer better and simpler solutions.

nah... juz asking.. wondering d out of sync is because of the preflashes... or maybe sigma flash is lousy.. juz curious.. nothing important...

hey guys ... juz wondering ... does the D40 supports CLS ? I don't know if im asking the right thing :P But basically my question is, if I get the SB600 with my D40 ... do i get to utilize all the functions in SB600 ? Like .. i-TTL , FV lock , slow sync ... stuff like that ?

karheng
08-21-2007, 10:55 AM
Yes you get all that but CLS requires an SB800 before u are able to work it off a D40.

Trust me, get the SB600. Just a bit patience to save up another 200 bucks.

The seller even show me how the Sunpak featured, I made up my mind and went for SB600. :D
