Hi all,
I really need your help, maybe this is my very uncivilized question. erghh...
I have a 430EX flash. Recently, I tried to used manual setting on Av mode, but something fishy appear.. maybe its just me...
I set the flash to 1/64, then set my 20D to Av mode, suddenly, the shutter speed automatically set to 1/250sec, that is the highest flash sync for my camera.
After that, I set it to Tv, then the camera automatically set the aperture to the smallest, that is f32 (using my Tamron lens).
Refer picture below for more understanding :
1. First, set the flash tu M and 1/64

2. Camera on Av mode, shutter automatically turns to 1/250sec

3. Camera on Tv mode, aperture automatically turns to f32

Camera on P mode, shutter automatically turns to 1/250sec and shutter turns to f32

I already clear all the Custom Function setting and camera setting, but just the same.
I also already tried with my friend's 20D, 30D and 400D, also gave same symptom. Also try using different flash 580EX and EX II, but still the same...
I assumed that Canon make their camera this way, is this normal???
thanks is advance.

It set to f/32 because your shutter speed is more than half a second...so it's trying to balance the exposure.
You know what Av and Tv are right?

I know what Tv and Av mode. And for your information, I also try the highest shutter that is 1/250sec and still the same. That's why I post this thing..

So on Tv when you set the shutter speed to 1/250 the aperture still remains at f/32?
I guess if that's the case there is a bad communication between the camera and the flash, perhaps one of the contact points is dirty.
Check your ISO is on lowest too.
And clean the hotshoe and flash contacts.

I can't think of a reason but it is normal :) But I'm speculating that the camera to flash communication is one way. The camera only detects the presence of the flash but doesn't know what it's setting is.

yup. Cleaned the hotshoe and flash contact, and set the ISO to 100, still the same. And some more, my friend's camera also the same using his flash, not mine. My friend's camera is about 3 months old and the flash also is still under warranty.
so I think its not about bad communication between the camera and the flash.

One more thing, when set to Av and Tv mode, the flash is supposed to be set to Flash fill mode. You can't have flash fill mode if your flash is set to manual. I just tried it with 580ex2 and 5D, same result as yours.

yeahhhhhhh!!! I think this is normal la... but that "5D" word from you really give me headache... if we meet someday, can I just hold it? don't worry, I just want to hold it, no need battery, just want to feel the camera... :D

You are giving the 5D too much praise :D 20D also can give excellent pics. Only reason I move to 5D is to get better AF accuracy, other than that, I would have been satisfied with 20/30D.

Aren't you suppose to set the camera to M mode when you use the flash on M mode?

im just curious, why do u want to use full manual mode when your flash is mounted on your camera? canon has E-TTL II to help assist you to compensate. i fully understand if your using if as a slave unit though.

I just want to try, thats all. Becoz' of that, I find some limitation on my camera. I think human's creation is not perfect, only God's creation is perfect! :D
