it really depends actually. depending on currency rate. when it was 100yen-rm2.70 buying here in japan is definitely cheaper. of course it depends on items. 50mm1.8 and 1.4 is more expensive here. tokina equipment is generally cheaper here though n i think tamron's 17-50 as well. im not too sure bt warranty issues.
if u ever do come, be sure to check out yodobashi camera or biccamera, the lenses they stock up is amazing :P
I was told Akiba (Akihabara) is the cheapest place to get electronic and camera stuff. http://www.akiba.or.jp/index_e.html

Not necessarily so. It's a popular tourist area and most electrical/electronic products are meant for Japanese market (think voltage, manuals in Japanese, etc). There some stores that offer products for international customers but generally can be little dated.
If you want substantial savings for photographic products, visit used camera shops in Shinjuku, Shibuya or even Ginza. Remember though, all purchase subject to sale tax.

If you want to buy cameras/photographic equipment, go to Shinjuku.
There's a big Yodobashi Camera there that specialises in camera equipment - four floors, i think (not to be confused with the general Yodobashi Camera store that sells all sorts of other electronics).
There's also a Bic Camera store in Shinjuku that sells loads of camera stuff too.
Generally, cameras and equipment cost more in Japan, but look out for clearance items. I got a Velbon tripod for a song!
There are also loads of 2nd-hand camera stores in Shinjuku though they're really only worth visiting if you're looking for old film cameras and manual focus lenses.
I've got some photos of Yodobashi Camera and Bic camera on my blog: http://chrischong.blogspot.com/2006/05/this-is-japan.html
