ShaolinTiger

Yah it's the best one, unless you want the heavier and much more expensive 180mm f/3.5 L USM.

You can also consider the Tamron SP90 for half the price of the Canon 100mm.

wow, thanks guys, currently have my eye more set on the Canon 100mm f2.8, but heard that the SP90 is better?

SP 90mm is better...if u r in budget and compare to non-USM canon lens,IMO don't look at Sigma 105mm or 70mm macro ,the AutoFocus of Tamron and Sigma Macro lens are damn slow ,but...SP90mm "Push out"swift to autofocus are able to cover back some speed(use Manual focus to approximate focus distance then push out to auto focus to finish focus).
of course 100mm f2.8Macro USM is faster !!

cucubud
09-11-2007, 07:44 AM
Canon 100mm macro lens has FTM (Full Time Manual) focusing. After the lens has done its auto focus, you can continuously focus if you want without switching it to MF (manual focus).

Canon 100mm macro lens will not protude out when focusing. It stays at the same length. This is good when you are taking pictures of insects.

ShaolinTiger
09-11-2007, 11:01 AM
Focus speed isn't relevant on Macro lens really as you'll be using manual/macro rails/body shift to focus anyway.

But Sigma HSM is as fast as Canon USM or Nikon SWM/AF-S.

well if you put it that way then there's really no point to ask in forums right? since everything can be found through google. :run_away:

Nope forum is for discussion of more abstract and cerebral matters that can't be found with any easy search engine query.

For example why ask the filter size of xxxx lens, or what is xxx? It's easily found on a search engine.

If you found out what a macro rail IS, but don't know it's FOR or WHY you would use one, that's a question you would ask on a forum.

But it's like asking what is a car? It's very different from which car should I buy and why, or why would I need a car.

One is being lazy, one is not.

Understand the difference?

seraphangel
09-11-2007, 01:47 PM
if one does not know what a car is and he saw a car, does that qualify as him finding out what a car is? the person sees the car, knows the shape, but without asking, how does one know how it works and what it is for? as such, searching for macro rail on the internet does come up with pictures, but I have no idea what it's for.

but of course once one is knowledgeable about a certain subject, many important questions will seem trivial and simple to them, but in truth, it is actually very difficult for the beginner.

ShaolinTiger
09-11-2007, 01:54 PM
You didn't ask what it's for, if you did it would have been answered ;)

haha, sorry, I should have phrased my question more specifically, instead of making a general question :) but from the pictures I can only guess it's like a tripod but it let's you move your camera back and front is it?

Yeah asking the right questions in the right way is one of the most important things!

Well it's something that fits on top of your tripod head underneath your camera.

It moves in both directions back/front and right/left using sliding rails, as sometimes when you are doing macro you can't twist the focus ring in small enough increments to get the perfect focal point.

So with macro rails you can slide the camera slightly backwards or forwards or to either side to get the exact focus you want.

09-11-2007, 02:24 PM
mmm interesting, then you can actually use it for other purposes as well besides macro. so many things to buy for photography, going to go bankrupt soon.

haha cause I always hear people say that 400D body too light and small so not steady, so have to add battery grip to make it have some weight and more stready. Your "刀仔锯大树” really meaningful.

I think only the SP 90 is easily ordered / available now. Image quality wise, well you can check to Pbase or Smugmug and search by lens to see sample pictures. As for durability, as long you're not treating your gear like hardcore press photographers I see no reason why Made in China wont last. Quality issue, seems that I seldom hear people say their macro lens not sharp. Its a prime, generally less issue.

ShaolinTiger
09-11-2007, 11:09 PM
The main difference is there is a non-glare coating on the rear element which helps cut down interior reflections and loss of detail/contrast.

The build quality isn't really any different, it's a superb lens and one of the best built 3rd party lenses.

Apart from the Tokina's of course, they are just tanks.

Guyz,

I had several frens complaining that SP90 Made In China has got some distortion issue. So do check out the lens and test them out, preferable load them in comp and take a look at the picture quality before getting them. On the other hand, these Made In Yappun ones are tact sharp. :D

Personally, I owned this SP90 before and its a superb lens. It is fact enough even for my previous owned D70... until I finally upgraded both of them. Think back, I still do miss them alot as they are really light weight and fun to shoot with.

For those already have tele zoom and wanna shoot macro...recommend buy extension tube ,eg..Tamron 70-300mm + extension tube 12mm ,is more worth than u buy a macro lens .

the extension tube turns telephoto lenses into macro lenses?

andrewng88
09-28-2007, 06:23 PM
i use my 24-105mm f4L regularly with kenko extension tube ( can get closer to subject but not as sharp as marco prime lenses ) ! sigma 180mm marco is still in my lenses to buy list!

o_buy
09-28-2007, 11:41 PM
the extension tube turns telephoto lenses into macro lenses?

nope...extension is increases the distance between lens and sensor ,and so it slightly or double increases the magnification of the lens .
usually tele lens already have 0.2 -0.5X(1:5 - 1:2)magnification ,and so + e.tube will gain up marco-effect.Beside that ,Tele macro lens is more useful to shoot insect....e.g:buy 180mm macro lens-tamron or sigma-Around RM2500+,but buy a 70-300mm(1:2) + e.tube to become 1:1 only RM1000+....

i use my 24-105mm f4L regularly with kenko extension tube ( can get closer to subject but not as sharp as marco prime lenses ) ! sigma 180mm marco is still in my lenses to buy list!

ya,u r right..of course got little bit different (price also different mah haha:D),but if possible to reduce the aperture to f11 or smaller ,will cover up some sharpness .(i tried many method to shoot macro photo before i got macro lens ,extension tube is more reliable and cheaper way than
close up filter ,inverse lens ,)
tele -convertor also increases the magnification
:partyon:

You can calculate here:

http://eosdoc.com/jlcalc/

Of course better to buy proper Macro lens, as it's designed for Macro shooting, then you can stick you extension tubes on that, or even reverse a 50mm on it!

You can try reversing a 50mm on your 70-300mm as well for some cool magnification.

BTW teleconverter doesn't increase the magnification, it just changes the FoV due to telephoto compression, it gives more working distance, so effectively you can use a TC and a close-up filter to remain the same working distance with more magnification.

never owned a Canon 100 USM but i did try the 100mm without USM b4.It's very solid built compare the other two.It produce super sharp pic as Sigma 105mm,if not better. Also,Canon lens should have better 2nd hand value too.

I once owned a Tamron SP90 but sold it after few days i bought.I just feel not comfortable with it and i never take good pics with it.I'm sure that's just me cos i can see most ppl love it very much and lots of good reviews of it online.

Frankly,Sigma 105mm i'm not really confident with it b4 i got it.(I once got a Sigma 24-70 F2.8 and found it's only sharp with F4.5 and above.) After i try out this Sigma 105mm,i must admit Sigma make very good lens too.I'm now thinking of getting Sigma 18-200 OS if the price is right :)

Above is just my personal expereince and might be different for other owners of the lens. Most probably i dun have the "skill" the handle the lens well, but that's what i had expereince, just to share, hope this helps.

Well I would like to add further Sigma and Tamron's being 3rd party lens, (touch wood) there are incidence of good copy bad copy lens. However, do note that since macro lens are mainly dedicated focal (primes) the chances of getting a bad copy is lower and for me, I have heard little people commenting on receiving a bad copy.

I think the forum is flooded with SP90s, probably enough to kill someone, if all SP90 users would to group up and throw their SP0s at anyone. hahahha.

Why dont you organize a "Please poison me" session this weekend and try the macro lenses. Chances are you may not get the results that you one, first hand cause it takes sometime to find your "feel" for it.

The weekend is coming, maybe you could poison urself enough during the weekdays and get it by the weekend for some really intensive shootouts. :tongue_roll:
