Dear Sifus,

Lately I found out that one of the local company doing this LED Ring Light Illuminator.
Currently they are building this lighting for industrial use.
I thought of asking them to modify for camera use.
Do you think this lighting will be useful?

Maybe, can use this for macro lighting
or creating round illumination on eye ball during portrait shot.
Will this work??

Theorically, it would work. In the real world tho, you will need:

a. power - macro work, and tight portraiture work at short lens to subject distance one will discover that the DOF is actually quite thin using an aperture of f/11. Speaking from experience, a tight head shot using a short telephoto lens an aperture of f/11 is sufficient to render enough front to back sharpness. With a medium format lens, the said photog need to stop down more.

Smaller aperture = less light in, hence, more light will be needed. A continuous light source at that distance with the amount of lights required will have to be super bright. IMHO, one is better off with a strobe.

Such a rig, is actually quite a thrill to have, as it will be a thousand times cheaper than an actual bona fide ring flash unit with a powerpack and accessories that comes with it.

There are some el-cheapo macro rings that use super-bright LED lights.

They work reasonably well but give rather flat light, I think the better ones come with some contrast adjustment.

As for larger subjects like humans, you'd need a hell of a lot of LED's to make a decent ring light.

Still better off with a strobe :)

thanks ted and ShaolinTiger for the advice.

flat light = dull or not natural?

I did a search on this ring light, and i found the picture for it.

Yeah... finally i got the demo unit of the ring light illuminator.
I never know that we can do a lot of things with LED.
Got custom lighting too, very interesting.

Will try to get some shot using the illuminator. :)
with standard lens, i got no macro lens
