Unfortunately Canon equipment doesn't allow you to check the shutter count easily like Nikon cameras.

Only Canon service center can access the data.

You just have to estimate from your file names, if you don't reset that is.

If you do, you can just guess.

It doesn't matter that much anyway, just keep shooting!

Try uploading a full image straight out from your camera to flikr. Check full picture details, I think there is something on shutter actuations but i'm not sure if its accurate

anybody knw how to check my 350D shutter count?

see ur picture number 423-23xx ,the 4= 40000-10000,2=2000 ,3=300 ,depend on ur number ,may reset.
Don't worry about shutter count ,if u r buy second hand, usually the seller will reset and it and simply tell u less than 5000 shoot...but do u think possible ?hahaha...even i bought a EOS400D at july but now the shutter count already more than 10000 ,i think every1 holding DSLR also same ,but doesn't matter.after the shutter service life expired then go to change shutter lo ,or buy a new camera...hahaha..:P

After doing much research and thinking about this issue, I've collected all the info I've learnt from such excellent forumers (like our friends ST, neoro and o_buy above), I've done a quick write up about this issue.

I feel the only way us laymen (and women) can estimate a Canon DSLR shutter count is if you've got continuous file numbering turned on, the folder (eg 100CANON) and filename (eg IMG_0001.jpg) will give you the shutter count.

Folder count starts at 100, so minus 100 from the number of your current folder and times that number with 1,000.

The filename (0001.jpg to 9999.jpg) gives you a number; combine it with the folder name and you'll come up with the number of shutter clicks.

eg \DCIM\385CANON\8569.jpg would be photo #28569. Note : the last 2 digits on the folder and first two in the filename should match. If they don't then you'll know someone's not been keeping the filename intact.

This number is only reliable when someone:
1) keeping continuous frame numbering turned on and never switches it off or resets it
2) not inserting a card from someone else's camera, which will throw the numbers off
3) never clicks the camera shutter without a card inside the camera
4) completes the numbers till 9999 every single time
and a few other instances

So, I put it to you, who has never done steps 1 to 4 (above) before. Highly unlikely, right?

Sometimes also, when you buy the camera from the shop, someone has tested the camera before and the shop people have reset the numbers once or used a CF card that's not brand new, right?

Conclusion for myself : I can never tell what is the exact number of shutter clicks of any Canon DSLR I've ever bought in my life.

Hope this info helps!

All the best!

Johan

PS - I also find that sometimes uploading it to flickr will show me the shutter clicks (like neoro said), and I like him am not sure how reliable it is :?

Sorry. My mistake. Let me do the math again.

eg1 \DCIM\385CANON\IMG_8569.jpg

385CANON

385 - 100 = 285 X 100 = 28,500

28500 combined with IMG_8569.jpg = 28,569

eg2 \DCIM\100CANON\IMG_0086.jpg

100CANON

100 - 100 = 0 X 100 = 000

000 combined with IMG_0086.jpg = 86

Totally agree on the above statement.

You cannot determine the shutter count of a camera by looking at the file number, especially if you have slot in someone's CF card into your camera.

If your camera is now on img_2388.jpg and you slot in another CF card which has a file number of img_6344.jpg your next shot will be recorded as img_6345.jpg.
When you slot back your own CF card which was on img_2388.jpg to shoot the next photo, the new photo will be recorded as img_6346.jpg.
You can never go back to img_2389.jpg onwards.

So, this file numbering img_6346.jpg cannot determine your camera shutter count as your true shutter count is img_2389.jpg (provided you have a new camera that started with a new CF card).:)

it's not just the file numbering is affected. on my 30D, the original folder was 192Canon bla bla bla. i put in my friend's CF into mine, now all my folders starts with 902Canon
