as requested, here is the color version of my B&W post. (http://www.shutterasia.com/forum/showthread.php?t=372)
i purposely underexposed it so that i can get the details (haven't recieved Hoya CPL yet at this time).
i'm not sure i used the right underexposed technique or not.
oh yeah, btw i shot this using 18-70mm.

here are the exif.
Camera model: NIKON D50

feel free to fix it. B&W version or whatever version that u think is nice.

Did Ilford style black and white conversion, tweaked the curve a bit for better tonal range, then boosted contrast a little and sharpened it up.

My attempt... PS CSII
It's a bit rough... :( Sorry 'bout that...

1. Copied the whole pic
2. Change the original to greyscale
3. Changed to Tritone
- White
- Pentone (Curved)
- Black (Curved)
4. Changed the levels to make it darker
5. Changed back to RGB
6. Created new layer and pasted the original pic I copied earlier
7. Erased the sky on the Tritoned pic
8. Changed the opacity of the pasted pic.

P/S: Look for an extra skier... Hehehehe (Can't help myself)

since when in the middle of sahara got so many trees? :smashfreak:
hahaha... naah, i'm just kidding with ya, woodnocks.

i'm comparing ST's b&w conversion and i think ST's version brought up more details & texture of the snow ground.

My 'overexposed version:
1. 100% desaturation
2. Set white point(level adjustment) on the white cloud
3. Crop away the big white sun.

here's my attempt:

Notes:
Make the snow white first - selective color layer, work on the whites
Correct under-exposure - curves layer - push histo as right as possible without blowing off, mask out sky
Enhance sky - gradient fill layer to heart's content, mask out snow
Flatten

B&W version

Note:
Take color version & simple channel mixer mono, no curve

I really love this shot - great composition with strong diagonals, fg, mid-g & bg semua ada. The "dirty" dark spots on the snow are actually shadows from the roughed up snow, tracks & footprints. The difficulty for me was how to make the snow white without losing these details.

Boleh kah?

ps: I don't find the blown out sun distracting - rather it catches my eyes and I naturally follow the flare into the rest of the picture. I love this pic :)

Yah I really like the pic too, the challenge of it for me was raising up the snow details and pushing down the curve without losing the details of the fabric on the dark skies.

Ok guys.. here is a little different from what have been posted. This is a version of manually sketch. I find the auto sketch option is unrealistic. So i did my manual way of doing it. I hope you guys like it, aspecially to the thread starter. Tell me if the picture really look like sketch picture if one didnt know of the original. Enjoy.
