nikon d40 ot batt. grip. according to my friend some function is not applicable, such camera control. only can be use for shutter release only. not much info, still searching:(
Ansmann came out D40/X battery grip. Without shutter!!
There are other brands that come with vertical shutter. But it you cannot use it to focus. Once you press it, it will strait away focus and shoot. It is the same theory like you using the infrared shutter thingy. There is someone selling D40/X Grip with shutter release in buysell i think. Try to pm him??? here the link

normally battery grip got another shutter release button, so you don't have to turn your arm when take portrait.
I believe this is the website you are looking for if need a 3rd party grip.

ar.. this is arguable. It depends. Some people get a battery grip because it can hold 2 batteries and better holding on your hand. Some of them feel the need of the vertical shutter.
I have the battery grip. With the shutter release one. But rarely i use it because it is quite troublesome. You need to activate infrared in camera and use the battery grip as you using the wireless remote.
Without the grip, i would feel the camera is kind of too small for me. Anyway how, i had choose this camera so i have to bare with it. For me getting a battery grip is simply for longer battery life and batter holding in my hand. Arguable whether is it worth to pay for it. It depends.
As for suggestion, i would suggest those who want to get battery grip get one without shutter release. Why? because i don't think you will use it. hah :p

Hmmm....so Bro Halimhamdan,
You already got your battery grip? Hehehe.
The reason why I bought the battery grip is because the D40 is kinda small and with the battery grip it feels more comfortable when I hold the camera. Vertical shutter is not much of an issue. It's more to the feel of holding the camera....not forgetting the looks...it does look like a pro cam. Hahahahaha....

I am using a battery grip but I hardly use the vertical shutter as I can't reach for the focus point control when shooting. The battery grip comes in handy in terms of battery life.

:run_away::mad:This it seem to be a good solution...until u try it and realize tha infra-red dont work the way it should be...and that...infra-red to work need to be activated in the camera...so...if activated...cannot use the horizontal shutter...which means...always changing settings in the camera while changing from vertical to horizontal.
i think we deserve a better solution....still waiting...

Greetings, everybody!
I also own a d40 for a while now and I am looking for a grip providing real vertical shutter release, with half-press to autofocus and full-press for taking the picture. I had no success whatsoever, but there is something that made me very curious: I looked inside the battery slot and I was surprised to find 5 round metal contacts and 2 rectangular ones, just as if they are ready for contact with the pins of such grip as the MB-D80.
Here's what I mean (please click for larger version):

Does anyone have any ideea what are those for? Is Nikon preparing us a well-deserved surprise? I hope so.
Thank you very much.
in my view nikon didnt produce battery grip for entry level SLR.wonders why..:? but maybe its because of its small size i doesnt need a battery grip.but another spare battery will do.there are a few 3rd part out there producing .D80 have a battery grip ,d200 &300 have 1.:)
i think nikon produce d40/d40x/d60 as a weapon in marketing.so, to tap the beginner in dslr mkt, a low-budget camera produced...... as we know, not only nikon produce dslr & the mkt is highly competitive. if not, people will only use compact digital camera laaa...

I'm just guessing why the batt grips for the D40/X/60 doesn't have the half way shutter release is mainly due to the absence of a socket or something. I was trying to look for a shutter release cable and I cannot find one for my D60. Just my hypothesis :P
