A rule of thumb for handholding is to use a shutter speed that is 1/lens focal length or faster. In other words, if you're shooting a 200mm lens, you need 1/200th second or faster.

My question is... if I'm using Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 and actually is equivalent to 26-78mm for dSLR, what is the CORRECT minimum shutter speed while at 50mm? 1/60sec or 1/90sec? Must I compensate if shoot digitally to the the equivalent focal length?

Thanks in advance. I really confused about this matter.

Rule of thumb for film : 1/focal length

Rule of thumb for digital : 1/(focal length X crop factor for digital camera)

So for 50mm in digital, say you have Nikon DX DSLRs which have crop factor of 1.5,

the minimum shutter speed is 1/(50x1.5) or 1/75sec.

So for your case, 1/60 is still a bit risky whereas 1/90sec should be ideal.

However, if you trained your hand and grip nicely....hehe...you still can get away sometimes with lower shutter speed than that.

Anyway, it's just a rule of thumb.....when you are force to a corner...sometimes you will just take the risk when lighting is really not at your side.

DK is correct, it's equivalent focal length, not actual focal length on crop sensor.

So it's focal length x 1.6 or 1.5.

You can go lower though, it's just a rule of thumb for those with undsteady hands.

I can often go down to 1/15 or 1/10 without much problem on a 17mm lens (24mm equiv).

but then with flash... the shutter speed can go lower as well rite ?
hehhehehe...

I've been trying and learning to use something like 1/30.. hehehe...
but indoor / low light, I start from 1/60.

Am I doing it correct ? Like I said... still learning...
