Yeah, minimum focusing distance in macro mode in 95cm.

1st shot looks nice but 2nd one lack of contrast. ;)

Yah I was gonna say the same thing about the second pic, if you notice the background colours are different, looks like slightly different saturation level aswell as contrast.
Nice shots from a 1:2 Macro lens though, these flies are pretty tiny.

#1 is sharp & crisp. i like it so much.
#2 a bit OOF and lack of colors contrast.
overall, good job!!! please keep them coming.

Looks to me 2nd pic is a cropped pic of 1st. Use curve in PS2 to get back the contrast and saturation.

the 2nd pic is not a crop of the 1st. it's a separate crop altogether. i guess a tighter crop reveals a lot more flaws; the 1st went through some generous USM. :) will do some work on them later and try out your suggestions. thanks. :)
