View Full Version : What i don't like about my D80

Been using my D80 more than 3 months now. While i think it's good overall, there are things I wish could be improved:
1. No hard button for spot metering?
2. Noise evident even at ISO 400, esp if lighting is bad. Same sensor as D200 right? Does any D200 users face the same issue?
3. DOF button hard to access.
Feel free to comment or add on to the list..:)

No problems at ISO400 for me on the D200.

Funny you're feeling this way. In reviews of the D80, tests concluded that the D80 has superior noise control compared to the Canon 400D!
Why don't you post some shots to proof your claims?

Thanks for pointing this out, Karheng. Mind telling me which site you're refering to? I think i hv to relook at my exposure & lighting condition.

Woah are you really sure of that? I've seen a Canon 350D outperform my Nikon camera at high ISO mate, especially when you talk about 1000 and above!

Go for D200, plenty outside the market now.

It's about exposure, and understand how to exposure properly.
Plus using the light and not pushing the camera too far, it only has a limited dynamic range, and you have to understand that.
If not you'll be underexposing shadows and clipping highlights.
Plus to avoid noise you need to get a well balanced histogram, as most cameras tend to meter slightly under you have to push the exposure slightly over if you are having noise issues.
I have no problems with D200 at ISO800 and sometimes ISO1600 and it doesn't handle noise as well as D80.

Thanks for your response. Hehe..i still think switching to spot metering that way takes time and might cost you a shot. :P

Thanks for the explanation, ST. Yeah..i suspect it might have to do with my poor, manual exposure :P. And i rely solely on the diffused light (by a styrofoam diffuser) from the built-in flash on board. I think an SB 800 will solve my problem :D

Sometimes it's easier to blame the camera than yourself. Try pushing your camera to it's limits and understanding him/her better before placing the blame on your camera. The best part is, if you don't work her properly, you're gonna get unsatisfactory results. If you do, you will. Your flash isn't lousy. It works fine via CLS and iTTL. It's just how you use it that matters. If you think your shots are noisy, try using the flash at ISO 800 and you won't see too much of it anymore, not directly, but after diffusion and bounce. It works too, but with wrong flash techniques, you could easily underexpose your shots as well.
I think the D80 is a wonderful camera, probably more like a hot girl who can do a lot but not everything. The D3 blows your mind away! Think about it...:D

I agree with ST, it's all about exposure to control the noise :) I'm still happy with my two D80 babies so far hehe..

Yep, exposure exposure exposure. Too bad the bugs like to hide in dark dark places and I can't go slower than 1/100, nor willing to go wider than f/11 or higher than ISO 400.

I think the problem is me, not the D80 :P
But still the wrong choice...should've been the D200 or better..:D:rasta:
