A very curious question.
whats the difference between 1:1 and 1:2
I went through google search and all the explanations give very detail essay which I don't understand.
which one is better? 1:1 or 1:2 ?
or 2:1 if there is any.

1:1 means real macro, it's the ratio of reproduction size on your sensor.
So if the thing is 5mm long, it will take up 5mm of your sensor.
If it's 1:2 it means it's half the size, so it's not true macro - it means the 5mm will take up 2.5mm on your sensor.
The other way round is rare, usually only found on MPE-65 which goes up to 5:1 meaning that 5mm will take up 25mm on your sensor.

Yes, 1:2 isn't even macro, it's just quite close.

It'll make it 1:1 or close enough.

what do you mean by its not working?
I don't think SP90 works on D40.

It wont auto-focus, but it should work fine in manual.

rgds,
It will be depending on your object. If your object is insect, definately it will run away. If it is flower, it wouln't be much of a problem.
Also, what do u mean by 'very very near'? 1cm macro? If it is so, careful with the lighting as the camera sticking too near to the object may have blocked some light and create shadow on the object.

Not necessarily. :)
I shoot all my bugs with less than 10cm working distance, and I manage.
Btw ST by law of ratios, 1:2 = 0.5:1. Tamron sells their non-true-macro lenses as 1:2 I believe.
